Our Deepest Fear...

I want to share a poem I thought of during my last coaching session. (Yes, I have my own coaches.) At the end of the session, we kind of switched roles and I began coaching my coach. When I mentally switched gears from the client to the coach, I instantly relaxed.
It was so much easier to focus on someone else rather than myself. I think it’s because the client role makes me vulnerable. It’s hard to hold up the mirror and reflex on who I am and where I’m going.
You see, the purpose of coaching is to look at your thoughts and actions and ask if they are serving you. The goal is to step into your greatness and be the person you were born to be. You’re also sharing that process with other people; whether it’s a coach or a coach and a group. It’s scary!
Like I said, it reminded me of this poem. It really cuts to the core of what holds us back from living the life of our dreams.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory ofr
God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
—Marianne Williamson

I love this poem because it not only defines that fear of growth but explains why we shouldn’t fear it. Of course, like everything else, it’s easier said than done. It’s easy to say, “don’t be afraid.” The hard part is actually conquering the fear and not being afraid.
The first step is to find a support group to help you work through the fear. (a Compass coaching group or an individual coach works wonders.) With a coach or a group you will get the support you need to be “brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous” without the fear.
I know it’s scary to make the change. You’re putting yourself out there. It’s new. What if people make fun of you? What if you can’t do it?
The answers to these questions are yes you can do it. No one will laugh at you if you try. Finally and most importantly, taking the risk is the only way to get the life you want.
You can change for a short time on your own, but if you want true and lasting change, you must look and see where you are. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, change begins inside you. It’s at your core.
So if you’re unhappy with some part of your life, don’t just accept that it is the way it’s supposed to be. That’s “playing small” and does not “serve the world”. You can change it. I can help.
