In this time of advanced electronic technology, which includes the television and the computer (internet), children have been accustomed to being fed with everything that they want. For example, the TV has hundreds of channels to choose from which are accessible through a few clicks on the remote control. On the other hand, the internet also provides online movie and TV streaming as well as animations and programs with a few mouse clicks. These cause a child to lose his/her focus especially in school. Keeping a child’s focus on his studies involves the efforts of the parents and the teachers. Through practical parenting, this can be addressed. So how can the people around them, especially the teachers, be able to help children? 1.Establishing a routine will help. Routines can help students and children keep their focus. And when introducing new activities, there should be a process for the transition. This should not be done abruptly as it will distract the child. Together with the routine, surprises along the way will keep him anticipating the future. 2.Use gestures and symbols to get their attention. Monotony in the classroom will only make students fall asleep. By using these gestures and symbols, they will stay alert. Examples of these are snapping the fingers and playing some music on the CD player. 3.Be visual. If adults like to see visual aids, all the more children do. These posters and drawings help them retain the ideas in their minds. Place these visuals on walls like each student’s progress, awards, topnotchers in math or English, kudos, and rules. Rules are better remembered when children are able to associate them with drawings. 4.Apply practical methods. When teaching students or children to identify the lesson of the story or the important points of an article, highlighters may be helpful. The neon colors are very attractive for them and so they anticipate the parts where they have to do some shading or highlighting. They can also use transparent tape or colorful pins to help them with their notes. 5.Cooperative learning helps. Sometimes, when the discussion is monopolized by the teacher, the students tend to fall asleep or sometimes, they lose their focus. They tend to think that they are not important to the group. By encouraging cooperative learning, they are able to feel that their contribution can lead to a desirable output. If they are paired off properly, they will enjoy sharing their ideas with each other. When they are grouped into small groups, the shy ones will be able to start talking and eventually overcome their shyness and fear of other people. Helping children keep their focus is very crucial to parenting. To know more parenting advice, visit www.parentingblog.com.au and be enlightened.
