Pipe smoking or Pipe tobacco

The history of smoking is rooted in the past. Scythians liked to breathe the smoke of dried plants, various nations used smoke tobacco as the component of magic rituals. It is unknown who was the first person to whom the idea to inhale smoke came to. In 4‐5 centuries C.A. people tried to use stems or hollow bones of animals. However such pipe prototypes did not suit them anymore. Human imagination does not have limits, there were enough materials for free creation. Great‐great‐pipes from clay and wood appeared. Gradually pipes acquired forms of present smoking pipes. First pipes of such form were found in America.

Besides quinine, trepanation of the skull and potato, America natives introduced tobacco and smoking pipes to Europeans. The thing which became a kind of getting pleasure for American Indians was one of the methods of spiritual contact. It does not matter if they smoked tobacco during such rituals or did not. Such kind of smoking may be compared with sacrifice. Every nation has its own methods of spiritual contact. Pipes made from red stone or clay decorated with figures of people and animals were family relic among Indians. The form of pipe varied.

Indians were very practical and ingenious. They could enjoy smoking sitting near the fire. Then they invented pipe tomahawk which was very convenient, they could smoke and kill enemies with the help of this device. With the time smoking pipes spread all over the world.

Pipe tobacco

Pipe tobacco can be purchased in several forms, which vary both in flavour (leading to many blends and opportunities for smokers to blend their own tobaccos) and in the physical shape and size to which the tobacco has been reduced. Most tobaccos resemble cigarette tobacco, but are substantially more moist and are cut much more coarsely. Too finely cut tobacco does not allow enough air to flow through the pipe, and overly dry tobacco burns too quickly with little flavour. Pipe tobacco must be kept in a humidor or an airtight container to keep from drying out.

Some pipe tobaccos are cut into long narrow ribbons. Some are pressed into flat cakes which are sliced. Others are tightly wound into long ropes, then sliced into discs. Flake tobacco (sliced cakes or ropes) may be prepared in several ways. Generally it is rubbed out with the fingers and palms until it is loose enough to pack. It can also be crumbled or simply folded and stuffed into a pipe. Some people also prefer to dice up very coarse tobaccos before using them, making them easier to pack.

Pipes have been used since ancient times. As tobacco was not introduced to the Old World until the 16th century, the pipes outside of the Americas were usually used to smoke hashish, a rare and expensive substance outside areas of the Middle East, Central Asia and India, where it was produced.

Native Americans smoked tobacco in pipes long before the arrival of Europeans. Tobacco was introduced to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century and spread around the world rapidly.
