Life at times can be very overwhelming. We know deep down there are things that we need to do, but we keep postponing or procrastinating, because we tell ourselves that we are way too busy to get things done. Everyone of us, at some time or another, are at strife with ourselves. We are often saying no to something that needs our immediate attention. Most of the time, we build a cocoon around ourselves and keep convincing ourselves that there is not enough time in hand to do the things that are really urgent and important. What Would Happen if You Didn't Do It? What we oftentimes do not realise in this process is that we are only doing ourselves great harm. If you empathise with this, the first thing you need to understand is that being in denial of the really important things in life will not get you out of any situation, nor will it take you very far. You have to learn how to prioritise your tasks to lead a life that is happy, productive and fulfilling. All you need to do is ask yourself some honest questions. Start by asking yourself the simple question, “what would happen if I didn’t do this?” For instance, if you didn’t exercise or go on a healthy diet, you could get weak or even fall sick eventually. Or if you didn’t quit your job and follow your passion, you would be cheating yourself and end up hating your job and yourself. You have to realise that inaction is in fact your worst enemy. If you do not take the appropriate action at the required time, you will end up regretting it in the long run, becoming more and more bitter by the day. You may claim to be busy doing your everyday tasks and put off things that are “uncomfortable” to do; but you may not be aware that what is keeping you busy is not as important (or as urgent) as the ones you've been delaying to do! If you are justifying your inaction with whatever is keeping you busy now, ask yourself what impact it would have in your life a year down the line. Will it really make a meaningful difference in your life, or will you pretty much find yourself in the same position, even when a whole year has gone by? The point here is that there is no use wasting time on things that have short term transient effects. It is much more worthwhile to focus on things that have long term payoffs. Does It Really Matter? It’s not for anyone to judge why you are doing or not doing something, but you owe it to yourself to give yourself an explanation. Are you on the current path because you choose to be here and really happy with yourself? Or are you here just to please family, friends and others? Or just because you think you are making a decent living? You can lie to everybody, but you cannot lie to yourself. When you dig deep enough, there will be a little voice in your head that will tell you the real reason why you are where you are. Ultimately it all boils to one simple yet life changing question, “Does it really matter?” You need to ask yourself that. If you are not doing what you are really supposed to do, stop wasting time and pull up your socks! Action must be taken, and it must be done now!
