Most companies devote a significant amount of time and effort to finding ways to improve their business processes. By finding more efficient ways of getting things done, businesses can save time, resources and money. However, process improvements aren't only useful for businesses. Why not take some time to investigate ways to improve processes around your own home? Here are a few ways you can streamline household tasks, get better organized, and become more efficient.

De-Clutter Your Home

De-cluttering your home is one of the best ways to improve its overall efficiency. When your home is cluttered, you'll waste time looking for things. In fact, clutter can even cause you to waste money, especially when you have to buy items to replace the ones you cannot find or those which have expired or become damaged. Giving your home a good overall cleaning is a great way to kick off any process improvement plan. Once you've cleared the clutter, you'll be better prepared to see what else should be done.

Assessing Your Needs

Chances are you already have a good feel for the things that are not working properly in your home. For example, if you're always late for work in the morning, you know that your morning routine isn't working for you. It can be helpful to keep a journal for several days, jotting down any household problems you run across. Once you've compiled a list of problems, brainstorm with your family to find ways to solve them. You might be surprised at how easy it is to find workable solutions if you work together as a family.

Make a Plan

Just as is the case with business process improvement plans, it's important to actually develop and write down your plan. If you've already compiled your challenges along with your brainstormed ideas, you can use this list as the basis for your overall improvement plan. When designing your plan, attach actual dates and task assignments to each item. Write down the expected results, as well any milestones that you'll try to achieve along the way. Make sure that your goals are measurable, so that you'll be able to accurately gauge your progress. For example, in the case of being constantly late for work, you might discover that you need to do some of your morning tasks the night before. Your overall plan should itemize which tasks these are, such as packing lunches or getting your child's clothes picked out for the next day. Then, track your progress for a week or two, to see if your process improvements are effective. If not, then revise your plan as necessary until you've achieved the desired results. Using a calendar along with your overall written plan can also be quite helpful.

Review and Reassess

Once you've created a plan and put it into action, it's important to reassess it from time to time to make sure it's still effective. After all, even the best-designed plan will need updated occasionally. Reviewing your overall plan on a monthly basis will help keep you on track, providing you with an opportunity to make adjustments or revisions if necessary.
