Psoriasis Shampoo: What’s the difference?
Written by Steve Berchtold
Any health problem is troubling, if it’s happening to you. But of all the skin problems, psoriasis is particularly irritating. It looks bad and it’s embarrassing. Even though other people may not see under your hair, using a psoriasis shampoo is essential for irritated skin relief.
Sometimes, it’s difficult even for doctors to tell the difference between “scalp psoriasis” and “seborrheic dermatitis” of the scalp. Both are a condition that affects the scalp. They also share similar signs and symptoms, like itchy, red, and scaly skin.
Usually, the scales of psoriasis are thicker and drier in appearance than the scales of “seborrheic dermatitis.” Also, psoriasis usually affects more than one area of the body. When a person has scalp psoriasis, they also have mild psoriasis on their elbows, knees, hands, and feet or may have subtle nail changes.
The signs on the scalp are:
• Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
• Silvery white scales on the hair shaft.
• Patchy scaling or crust on the scalp that bleeds when removed
• Patches beyond the hairline
• Itching and/or soreness and a good psoriasis shampoo can help
The signs of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp are:
• Red greasy skin with flaky white or yellow scales
• Yellow or white scales attached to the hair shaft
• Patchy scaling or thick crust on the scalp
• Patches usually by the hairline
• Severe itching
No single test can confirm psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis. The doctor usually makes a diagnosis with a simple visual examination of the skin. Fortunately, scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis can be treated with the same type medication.
Generally, a good psoriasis shampoo contains ketoconazole, tar or salicylic acid. Ointment, gel or foam preparations may also contain tar products, corticosteroids or vitami
D analogues. Vitamin D analogues capable of effective parathyroid suppression have been developed. They’re able to avoid undesirable low bone turnover, hypercalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia, and have received considerable attention over the last decade.
A mineral or oil-based preparation can be applied to the scalp at night and then a shower cap can be placed over the head to loosen scales and reduce any inflammation. Finding the best psoriasis shampoo for yourself, may be a trial and error process, but is well worth the time.
Scalp psoriasis is sometimes more difficult to treat than seborrheic dermatitis. In those stubborn cases of scalp psoriasis, the doctor may use oral medications, like methotrexate or cyclosporine.
If stronger treatment is required, he may combine stronger cream and ointment medications.
A good psoriasis shampoo is one weapon in your arsenal for fighting the irritation, itching, soreness and overall unpleasantness of psoriasis.
Diet can play a major role in the improvement of your health. The most promising dietary treatment of psoriasis involves following a gluten-free diet. Gluten is a stored starch protein found in grasses like wheat, rye and barley. Some people have antibodies to the gluten component resulting in a condition known as celiac disease. When people with celiac disease eat bread and other foods containing gluten, they experience gastrointestinal symptoms and break out in a pustular skin eruption called dermatitis herpetiformis.
