Quants is one of the section in CAT where there is assured ability to score complete marks. But also, it is the most time-consuming sector of the examination. Every quant question given in CAT is one of its kind and are usually not repeated.
Let us do a small math on time allocation on each question. There are 32 questions in Quants which has to be solved in average time of 60 Minutes. On an average, you have 113 seconds to allocate your time to each question. We often tend to overthink over a question and become assertive on getting solution for it. Due to this, there is an imbalance created with respect to the proportion of time which often leads to some unattended questions.
Well there can be a thumb rule set up while going through questions in CAT. My tip is that for every question you come across in quants section should be able to get the Yes Factor within 25 Seconds, if not then it is better to skip the question and move on. One thing that has to be given high importance is ‘time’. Time is the most important factor while writing CAT exams. Missing a question can lag you by high percentile.
So how to get ahead of these drawbacks? Here are a few tips that will help you before attempting Quant questions:
1. Memorize Tables till 100, it is always better to memorize than calculating the answer. It’ll save a lot of time as we tend to calculate through memorial of single digit tables than double digit. Less calculation equals more time.
2. Well there are plenty of topics in Quant where questions can be framed. However, it is always beneficial to avoid maximum workings on your paper. This will buy you more time as the majority of your calculations will happen in your mind.
3. It is always better to solve last year question papers, on which you can allocate time to practice on the following topics and train yourself on proportion of Excellency.
4. Don’t left out any topic in CAT, though Algebra and Geometry holds highest weightage but missing out a topic can be big risk.
5. It is better to first find out the answer rather than going with options in the list. Sometimes when answer tends to be wrong we try to go with the nearest match, that is again a wrong way to approach. As there is negative marking for every wrong answer.
