A few years ago, the city I live in was awarded federal funds to assist the disadvantaged. This money was not used for education, small business start up or some other project that would boost their ability in some way. Instead, one of the main streets in the poorer part of town was landscaped with a median strip planted with huge palm trees for over a mile. It looks better, but mainly helped the landscape earn some money. Last year, one of the most popular TV shows raised millions to assist people in Africa. The money was use to distributed mosquito netting to help reduce the spread of maleria, a temporary solution only, as it did little or nothing to increase their overall ability to handle the situation in the future.nnnSo what is REAL help? Back in the 1960s, in one of his many lectures, L. Ron Hubbard pointed out that one of the best ways to really help someone is to find out what the person can do and get them to do it better. He told the story of Mrs. Murphy and the Social Worker. In her visit the social worker saw that the house was filthy, dirty dishes piled in the sink and the children unkempt. But when the social worker took a pack of cigarettes from her purse, Mrs. Murphy quickly emptied a full ashtray and washed it out for her. On leaving the social worker told Mrs. Murphy that she would be back in a few weeks and asked her to be sure that she kept all her ashtrays cleaned up in the meantime. On her return the social worker found that not only were the ashtrays clean, but the whole house was cleaned up and the children were dressed neatly. She found out what Mrs. Murphy could do and got her to do it better.nn"Help" that is not REAL help. There is nothing wrong in giving a beggar on the street money, if you also give him a way of paying it back in some fashion. To do otherwise is to degrade him even further. In a sense you would be saying, "Poor you! You can't help yourself." You might offer him so some yard work and pay him for it, leading him to check out the neighborhood for additional yard work. Or you could give him some money along with a pamphlet from your church or another organization with helpful guidelines on how to improve things.nnThe Way to Happiness The most successful such handout is The Way to Happiness booklet that is a non-religious moral code containing 21 precepts that are a common sense guide to better living. Over 72 million of these booklets have been distributed to date and are a major part of the Criminon program that is emptying the prisons in Indonesia, Israel and elsewhere. About the Author

I graduated from college in 1956 and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris for four years where I also directed English language theater and took my first professional course in Scientology.

I found that praticing Scientology was a lot more interesting, worked professionally as an Auditor (one who listens and computes) at the New York Center, then got a job working directly with the founder, L.Ron Hubbard, in England in 1962.

During the next 27 years, I completed all the major Scientolgy professional courses at that time and served as a senior executive during the rapid expansion of the Scientology movement.

I have been active in this movement ever since.
