Rely On Yourself

Please don't take this the wrong way, because that's not the way it's intended. But in a manner of speaking, I am excited about these tough economic times, these cutbacks, these peels and reels of people who were put out on the street. No job, three months of COBRA benefits, insurance only. It's going to be bleak.
Of course, they're getting help from here and there—and they're really acting it, expecting it, and demanding it. That's another story, too.
But here's the point. As a human potential coach, the biggest obstacle I ever wrestle with is "No, I can't take a risk, I have insurance," or "I have to keep my job," or "My position is secure. Security is the most important thing to me." I'm not saying any of this in a bad manner, but I'm telling you that's the obstacle: security.
And these economic times are showing people, are demonstrating to people, are saying what I've been saying all along—you've only got the illusion of security. You're only as secure as your company is. And when your company has a few hiccups and wants to go bankrupt, where are you—where are you? I mean, where is your security?
You're still up to your eyeballs in debt—they don't relieve you of that. They don't cut back on your expenses at school, do they?
Where are you?
My message has always been and will always continue to be that you must rely on yourself. You must rely on your own internal power and resources.
You must be self-determining. No, I'm not saying to be an island, or be isolationist. I'm saying be resourceful, be appreciative of life, be proactive. Know that you are creating life, and there is no absolute security.
That being the case, get in the fray and fight. Create the life you would choose to have, and whether you achieve it exactly or not, just an effort is noble.
And certainly, it's like when you aim for the stars and you hit the moon—well, the moon's way out there, too. Rely on yourself. Be proactive.
