RichLife Question: Create Wealth or Create Lasting Value?
Written by Beau Henderson RFC, CEA, CPSC
Here’s the plan: get a job (or career); work for a set number of years; put together a retirement plan to accumulate enough money (whatever that magical amount is); stop working at retirement age and coast the rest of the way to the end.
What’s wrong with this picture?
I’m sure you’ll agree that this closely describes the lives of most people in today’s world. But is this the best way? Is this a fulfilled life? Is this a RichLife?
Let’s look at the above description a little closer. What if this individual is totally dissatisfied with the current employment? And what if this individual sticks with the job only because of the so-called retirement benefits? Essentially, the idea of accumulation (or hoarding) keeps one chained to institutions, be that a corporation, a financial institution or the government.
Even if every detail of the above scenario plays out perfectly – work till retirement date and still eligible to receive the benefits – the financial benefits will still be set at the minimum amount needed to exist.
The person caught on this treadmill has the mindset that there’s only so much money and only a very limited time to accumulate it. That’s what I call a scarcity mindset. That is not the best way to live the RichLife.
What’s the alte
ative?
The alte
ative is to discover your life purpose and begin to live it out each day. Determine to live life as a steward over your talents, giftings and resources. Determine to live life in a way that creates value to you personally, to your family and to the world around you.
Abundance springs from creativity and exercising creative ideas. I’ve seen it happen again and again. People who invest in finding their life purpose – and then live out that life purpose – achieve an amazing degree of freedom.
Being actively involved in your life purpose results in a sense of well being and fulfillment and also results in ongoing financial resources. Instead of looking fearfully into a stationary water well that is continually being depleted, they drink from rushing streams that are never depleted.
What does your own life look like? Are you spending all your days accumulating what you think is going to be the correct amount of money for retirement? Or are you spending your days investing in your life purpose in order to create ongoing value?
I’ve never seen it to fail – the person who is completely in tune with a determined life purpose is active, productive, happy, and fulfilled. Now that’s what I call a truly RichLife.
