Being prepared is the key to a stress-free and fun road trip. Here are some tips to make this year’s trip the best ever!
Highlight your map. If you use a road map, highlight your intended route.
Use the internet. Get free maps and driving directions from the internet.
Pack a goodie bag. Pack a few toys, food and drinks in a goodie bag to appease children when they get fidgety. Crayons and a coloring book, crossword puzzles and electronic games are fun activities during travel.
Play road games. Have some road games in mind when traveling with children. They could count red cars, look for certain letters or words on signs, or make a list of the different state license plates they spot.
Listen to books. Pick up some books on tape at the bookstore or library and either play out loud for the whole family, or each child could listen to their choice with a personal CD player.
Plastic zip bag for coins. Pack a small plastic zip bag with change and keep it in the glove compartment. You’ll have change handy for tolls.
Tune-up time. Check the tires and fluid levels before taking a road trip. Inspect windshield wipers, hoses and belts for wear.
Pack a bag for the car. Pack an emergency kit that includes jumper cables, flares, a first aid kit, a flashlight and basic hand tools.
