When it comes to identity theft, not all thieves are ditching their tried and true methods of obtaining information in favor of the digital age. While some thieves may find it easier to steal information via the Internet, many are quite content to use the same methods that they have used for years. Mailboxes are the most common non-technological means for identity theft, and with the majority of mailboxes not being equipped with mailbox locks, this presents an ample opportunity for any thief to obtain all of the information they need in order to conduct their shady practices. Who is at Risk for Identity Theft? Virtually anybody can become a victim of identity theft - All it takes is enough information being obtained by the wrong person. Those who are at a particularly high risk are businesses and individuals who rely on mail service to conduct their day-to-day transactions. The majority of businesses that utilize postal services already have mailbox locks in place, but for those who don't, the results can be disastrous. Many thieves depend on businesses to supply them with an endless amount of information, whether it pertains to the business itself or their employees. With a seemingly endless supply of sensitive documents and checks being placed into the company mailbox, these criminals know that this is one of the best places to score. Just as mail theft affects businesses, personal mailboxes are just as likely to be targeted. Some thieves prefer to steal mail from residents who let their mail pile up for days on end, while others may pick a victim at random and take their chances. Which Pieces of Mail are Thieves Attracted To and What Do They Do With It? Identity theft serves the purposes of obtaining information that can be used to impersonate someone for financial gain or other malicious intent, and this is accomplished one of two ways: Thieves either steal checks with the intention of cashing them immediately, or they steal mail over a period of time which allows them to slowly, and unnoticeably, collect enough documentation to completely steal an identity. There are four types of mail that attract the interest of identity thieves, and each piece can be used to commit different types of fraud. Preapproved Credit Cards - Credit card offers may be the best source for thieves, due to the fact that they contain so much personal information. Credit card offers are often sent as unsolicited mail, so people are not aware that they have been sent until the day they arrive. This creates an opportunity for thieves to steal mail that can go undetected for long periods of time, allowing them to open credit cards under different names. Bank and Credit Card Statements - With the amount of information included on financial statements, these pieces of mail are priceless for identity thieves. They now have enough personal and financial documentation that can be used to gain access to their victim's assets. Insurance Paperwork and Government Documents - These pieces oftentimes contain all of the means a thief may need to steal an identity, and it's been provided in a single piece of mail. They now know their victim's age, date of birth, gender, address, phone number, social security number and more. Checks - Whether or not a thief plans to steal an entire identity, they will steal checks. For them, it’s an instant payday. Mailbox Locks Can Secure Private Information Since it is not possible for most people to greet their postmaster upon arrival and take their mail immediately, both businesses and individuals should invest in mailbox locks as a preventative measure against identity theft. All it takes is a few seconds for a thief to gain access to personal, financial and sensitive information - and it can take countless hours to undue the damage that an identity thief can cause. Mailbox locks are the simplest and most economical way to safeguard information, and hiring a locksmith to install them may be the smartest investment businesses and individuals can make.
