There are many simple steps to ensuring internet safety for children that use MySpace. MySpace is a very popular social networking website that links individual users on an international basis. There are many advantages to implementing the use of this particular website as an adult. This is especially true if you are marketing a particular product and/or service. Unfortunately, MySpace has been determined to play a role in several crimes that have been committed throughout the world. Many of these crimes have resulted in children becoming the victims. As a parent, it is important to know and understand how to ensure internet safety for children that use MySpace. In this guide, you will learn just that!

Many of today’s children are implementing the use of the internet. It is not at all uncommon for even very young children to be attracted to the internet. Their favorite cartoon shows and characters have websites; there are many different game websites, and more. MySpace is also becoming an area of interest for young children. They can keep track of their friends from school, contact family members, and even download MySpace Apps that allow them to enjoy various types of games. Individuals that seek to commit crimes against children typically target areas where children frequent online, and unfortunately, MySpace is considered to be a “hot spot” no matter what area of the world you are in.

There are criminals online each and every single day – no matter what time of day it is. These individuals are referred to as “internet predators”. Typically, the individuals that track down children on the internet do so with the purpose and intent of harming them physically, mentally, and/or emotionally. You should be aware that no one is immune from the dangers that exist in the digital world, but that they can take steps to ensure that they are as safe as possible. First, inform your children of the dangers on the internet. You may get a little resistance at first, but stay persistent. Inform your child never to give out personally identifiable information such as their name, their true age, the region that they live in, or their physical address or telephone number.

You should ensure that when your child creates their MySpace account that they do not place their birthday, their real name, and similar types of information. It may be a good idea to create a “Private” profile in which a person has to enter either the last name or the email address of your child in order to be added as a “friend”. This will ensure that only internet users that actually know your child will gain access to them on MySpace. In addition to this, you should not allow your child to post pictures of themselves, or places where you live. Technological products today can enhance photographs and display details such as what is listed on street signs, business signs, and more. Many predators can easily look at a picture and determine where the photograph was taken with success.

It is important to ensure that you monitor the activities that your children indulge in when it comes to MySpace. This includes emails, comments, and even the new messenger application that allows MySpace users to chat with one another. It may be challenging to sit right beside your child at all times while they are online, but you can create a password that only you know and log them in and out and prior to logging out, check the “sent” messages, “comments” and “inbox” messages. This will allow you to see a little bit of what your child experienced online. You should not let your child know that you are doing this unless something of interest comes up that you need to discuss with them. MySpace can be an enjoyable and entertaining experience. If you take the steps to ensure your child’s safety while they interact on the website, it is likely that they will never become the next victim to the crimes that occur through MySpace.
