To live a healthy life you have to do some physical workout. By keeping your body fit and healthy you can face any challenges in life. A lot of people want to make exercise a regular part of their lives but they fail to do so. Exercising is on the top list of habits people want to follow but they are not able to put their thoughts into action. They find a lack of motivation, coming out of their comfort zone, etc. as one of the many reasons for not being able to make exercise a habit. In this article, we list some of the simple ways to make exercise a habit.
  • Habits are developed when you follow the same thing over and over again. When you perform the same behaviour repeatedly it becomes a habit. To put it in simple words, if you are not doing anything consistently, it would not become a habit. This is why routines and rituals are so important to develop a habit.
The same theory applies to exercising. If you are doing exercising repeatedly and regularly it will become a habit. You can set up an exercise schedule and follow it every day. By doing so, exercising would become a ritual. You would then do a workout automatically every day.
  • Most people fail to implement exercise in their regular schedule because of the big targets. The best way to make exercising a habit is to start with small targets. Start with relatively easier exercises that you can do it comfortably. Make sure that the task of exercising is so easy in the initial phase that you cannot give up. By focusing on smaller and simpler things you will not worry about the entire workout. Having an easier and simpler approach in the initial phase will also help you in finding motivation. Slowly and gradually when you get comfortable with your easier workout regime, you can raise the level and start practising relatively tougher exercises.
  • Most of you fail in making exercising your regular habit because you focus more on the results rather than the habit first. Without even developing exercising as a habit, you start looking for results. Most people start exercising with a target of losing say 5 kgs weight in 2 months and so on. They would start their exercise and diet to focus on the outcome. This is not the right approach. The focus must be on the process and not on the outcome.
You must first make sure that you can establish a new normal and building a new routine. Results will take you nowhere in the long run. You can start by exercising for the first 6 months and check how much progress you have made. Once you fall into the category of a person who would not miss working out at any cost, the results would come automatically. You will see yourself improving and progressing well in the times to come. The key is learning the process and once it becomes a habit, all you need is an improvement. The above mentioned are some of the ways to make exercise a habit. I was watching my six and nine year old daughters playing the other morning when suddenly there was a barrage of I Hate You and I Don't Like You Anymore statements flying about the room.
