Six Tips to Feel Painless After Dental Surgery
Written by Cynthia Witson
Dental Surgery can be very intimidating. You may feel like you have no control over what is happening to such an important part of your body, but following these tips may make it a little less painless.
1) Don’t Be Scared
One of the first things you need to realize after having dental surgery is that swelling, bleeding and pain are all normal effects of having dental surgery. Most of these symptoms lessen or go away a day after the surgery. However, if these symptoms seem unbearable and conce
ing do not hesitate to call your dentist. They can recommend ways to ease the discomfort or will tell you if your problems are abnormal.
2) Embrace the Cold
Cold can be a great way to ease the pain after dental surgery. Cold packs applied to the face above the site of the surgery are highly recommended shortly after the surgery takes place. The ice pack should be applied in intervals of keeping it on for 15 minutes and off for 15 minutes.
3) Relax
Even if you feel great after a dental surgery, you need to rest. Dental surgery should be treated like surgery on any other part of your body. Rest will aid the healing process, and make it more comfortable for you. To ease swelling, lay with your head elevated by a few pillows.
4) Be Gentle
Although you may be very hungry after dental surgery, you need to be gentle on your mouth. If allowed, eat soft or liquid foods. Drinking lots of liquids are recommended. Harder foods can put you in a lot of pain or lead to more risks. However, most dentists will want you to be able to get back to your regular diets as soon as possible.
5) Medication
Probably the most obvious tip on this list is to take pain medications, and it is usually the most effective. Take over the counter pain medications as directed. The pain may be too strong for these medications to handle, which in that case your dentist can probably prescribe you something. Also, do not neglect to take antibiotics if they are prescribed by your doctor.
6) Keep it Clean
Oral hygiene is equally important after dental surgery as it is at any other point in your life. Usually mouth rinses will be recommended for the time shortly after the surgery. About a day after the surgery you can floss and brush your teeth, but very gently. Good hygiene will ensure a safer and less painful healing process.
