Is genius a simple thing? What is it? Development, expounding, individuality in the perspective of favourable, adverse and under any circumstances—will not all these things be assessed? Of course, judged by the standard of Mother, everything will outright vanish into a mere dot. Looking at her nobody can keep up his glory whatever it may be. Genius has sprung out of the bosom of that life. Can genius ever look upon that as insignificant of subsidiary and still succeed? So it pains us to find the creator imperfectly manifested in the midst of his creation. Before comprehending a philosophy, second to none, this super-life has to be observed. Only then can the life and philosophy, that is, the philosophy of life will be fully comprehended.
After a long melodious song Ma-Mahajnan sang she started speaking in her own way.—“If only you thought of it as your work scheduled--I do it since it is within my capacity—this is my work.” Taken in this spirit, it wouldn’t have given rise to vain-glory. Why do you think of it as genius?
There’s in me certain attribute—this awareness is knowledge, there’s need of another kind of knowledge to keep that knowledge within bounds. That kind of knowledge has to be religiously pursued. I require you to cultivate that. That knowledge avers—why do you think of it as genius? Take it as your own work. It has come to your hand. You know of it. So you do the work.
Then what is the consciousness of ego? It is ignorance, isn’t it? Then the attribution of which you feel proud—it is knowledge of that attribution. That knowledge can not kill ego-consciousness. Then? That knowledge which has no attribution—there’s one, sitting ahead to direct, you should acquire that knowledge indeed.
Prosad: That knowledge which has no attribution? Am I to understand that ‘Mahajnan’—Unfathomable Knowledge is devoid of attribution? Ma-Mahajnan: Unfathomable Knowledge is devoid of attribution. He only sits overhead, just for transmitting “Yes” or “No”. He is there just for verdict. When you resort to that knowledge, you’ll find all the others subordinated to that.
Prosad: why? He’s endowed with all the attributes.
Ma-Mahajnan: Yes. Well,..
Prosad: Just as we find you.
Ma-Mahajnan: So it is. (laughs)
Prosad: This is very nice. That knowledge which is devoid of all attributes—
Ma-Mahajnan: He makes things understood by only dropping hints—will speak in terms of ‘yea’ and ‘nay’. He will simply say ‘nay’. But there is nothing else beyond ‘nay’. Now you descend and roll down to the bottom of the stairs. The more you fall down, the more you’ll see of Him. Again, you roll upwards. The more you ascend, the more you’ll see of Him. He will only utter ‘yea’ and ‘nay’.
Prosad: Well, He is endowed with all the attributes, isn’t it?
Ma-Mahajnan: Yes, by all means. There’s no other exercise of judgment possible beyond that point.
Prosad: He is beyond the three attributes—sattava, rajas, and tamas (purity, energy, lethargy) One-Beyond-The-Triple-Attributes.
Ma-Mahajnan: Exactly so.

Puffed up with glory of genius,
I know, you hardly touch the dust with your feet.
Why did you fancy—‘It isn’t dust but velvet--as if a green stretch of grass? ‘I am a genius; this thing is meant for me?’

Mother expounds the third paragraph of the song she sang only a little ago.
Somebody is found utterly sco
ful of all things. So wrapped up in himself that he doesn’t mind where he treads upon. That is, because of personal ego and arrogance he’s defiant of everybody, behind these two dominant traits the rest recedes into the background. His other passions come and go in there own way. He disposes of them with scant respect. ‘Disposing of with scant respect’ doesn’t mean ‘not indulging in’—not that. So high has he mounted on a tall perch of arrogance that he is desperately defiant of that. All sides are hidden by his genius.

About the Author

Ma-Mahajnan, a matchless spiritual genius, expressed her entire creation in a state of "Conscious Trance” which has all been stuffed with matters of highly philosophical value and related with strong literary sense. She could not attend even Primary School due to extreme poverty. Strangely, she was taught all by herself in the School of Nature. The weird and wonderful life is possibly the souse of her vast experience and profound realization. She was born on 17 July, 1928 and passed away on 22 January, 2011. Listen to what Ma-Mahajnan said once: What I tell you briefly about the early phase. Listen first about my life. I was married off at the age of thirteen. I was the second wife, my husband married for the second time and thus I came into his family. I didn’t get any chance for schooling.” You’ll perhaps weep to hear how I came as a wife, driven by utter poverty or how they packed me off. After that all at once I slowly progressed in the domain of that ‘Nothingness’-- “I’m the Mother; the Nothingness, too.”

People paint for a lot of different reasons. To relax, to express themselves , to create beauty and meaning, to make money, because they have a passion to create, to gain approval, to stay sane, to make sense of the world, to play and have fun. All of the above are wonderful and valid ...

Creativity is a subtle and magnificent dance between the rational and the intuitive, between the left and right parts of the brains, between technique and imagination. Both partners in this dance are absolutely necessary and are needed in equal proportion, which means that imagination is not more important than technique and visa versa. If you only live in the imagination, you will never get organized, you will never complete your story. However, if you start from the rational, linear, organizational part of the process, ( ie. Gotta have the perfect opening sentence and first paragraph...

Recently, I was considering the question of peace, which doesn't happen often while writing fiction. There's all that drama, love, hate, desire, envy and so on. Peace, with any luck, comes at the end of the novel. I was considering this aimlessly as I lay with my head on Phoebe's warm flank. Phoebe, being the sensitive, intuitive creature she is, immediately tuned into my musings and suggested we consider the question of love instead, which she quite rightly observed was a precursor to true peace.

It is sometimes said that the truth should never be allowed to get in the way of a good story. Sometimes, however, it is the true events that turn out to be the stories that tell us the most. This is the case with the story of my friend's cat. My friend, Rachel, has a cat. Nothing special ...
