There is a distinct difference between the fields of ultrasound and medical sonography. Ultrasound is the actual frequency that humans have the ability to hear and sonography uses frequency to create images. The person who works as a sonographer uses specialized equipment to help create the images. In order for the images to be created using ultrasound waves, the person working as a sonographer must locate the body structire that requires imaging. The ultrasound equipment must be positioned at the proper angle in order to allow the sound waves to properly bounce off the organ, fetus or tissue in order to create a clear image.

The sonographer has the duty of creating images of the internal body structures using ultrasound waves and other equipment. They individual in this position must have a full understanding of the body to know where the organs, tissues and other structures are located in the patient’s body. The sonographer must also have a solid understanding of the physiology of the body in order to know what the organs, tissue or other body parts should look like.

It is imperative that the sonographer take images of the correct body structures. In addition to having a complete understanding of how internal structures of the body are supposed to look, the sonographer must be able to identify and report any oddities observed to the requesting physician. The ability to spot irregularities or oddities is vital to the sonogram procedure. The sonographer must create clear images in order for a proper diagnosis to be made. What is observed and reported by the sonongrapher not only impacts the diagnosis but can also effect the recommended treatment options.

In order to prepare for a field in sonography, an individual must complete a training program. There are training programs offered at colleges, universities and even medical facilities. Employer smay require the sonographer to be registered with an organization such as the American registry of radiologic technicians. In some cases the employer may even sponsor the membership.

Although individuals have a number of training options employers typically prefer to hire sonographers who possess at least an associate’s level of education. The degree programs that best prepare individuals to work in the field of sonography will provide a combination of hands on training and required coursework. After the required coursework has been completed, the individual will be allowed to work as a student intern at a medical facility. The experience that can be obtained through the hands on component of the program allows students to gain valuable knowledge of sonography as well as provide training on how to properly use the ultrasound and imaging equipment.
