Social anxiety can happen to anybody of any age, gender or occupation. This disorder might not seem life threatening at first, but it might as well be. Having social anxiety means that you’re constantly afraid of being in situations where people will look at you, or situations where you have to present yourself. Fortunately, there’s social anxiety treatment available to address the problem. If you find yourself dealing with this condition, there’s no need to fret. It can be cured. All in due time, of course. Below are some examples of social anxiety treatment you might want to try. Social Anxiety Treatment # 1: Therapy You might be slightly uncomfortable talking about your feelings to a stranger at first, but you’ll get used to it soon. Before you know it, your therapist is no longer a man or a woman in glasses but a real confidante. You’ll feel safer talking to therapists about your issues since they’re bound to the doctor-patient confidentiality rule. Talking about your problems is also one step forward to gaining more confidence. Social Anxiety Treatment # 2: Natural Remedies Different smells affect people in different ways. However, these are some scents that help reduce your anxiety. Lavender has always been a favorite. It not only chases nervousness away, but it also has the ability to perk you up in an instant. Chamomile and lemon balm will also do the trick. Social Anxiety Treatment # 3: Breathing Exercise Before you go and hyperventilate in one corner, remember all that your therapist has told you. Bring out your handy lemon balm and take a good whiff. Close your eyes and imagine yourself calming down. Inhale slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Do this for several minutes until the feeling of anxiety passes. Social Anxiety Treatment # 4: Medication While you do have the option of medication, better save this as a last resort. These are mostly anti-depressants or calming agents. Taking medication helps you control your emotions and helps you stay calm in situations when you’d usually panic. It would be wise to consult your doctor about the kind of medication you should take. Never assign yourself an anti-depressant if you’re not sure of its effects. Social Anxiety Treatment # 5: Combination Therapy and Medication In some instances, patients are given the double social anxiety treatment. This means that you are asked to attend therapy sessions and are prescribed certain kinds of medication. Therapy also takes on different forms. You can be asked to partake in a role-playing session to get you used to certain situations. Or you can join a group that can educate you about your condition. If you doctor doesn’t see the need to prescribe you anything, don’t push. If your situation is bothering you more than what you can handle, you can ask your doctor to see if he or she can give you anything for it. Don’t be afraid to get social anxiety treatment. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. As long as you know that you are just trying your best to improve your situation, then nobody can say anything about it. The more you keep it a secret, the more it will hamper your life. So get social anxiety treatment now and get your life back.
