Spiritual Parenting Our Children

Spiritual parenting our children is grounded in the intention to love, support and guide our children to what is best for them on all levels - body, mind, emotion and spirit.

Our children come through us, divinely created with the grace of Goddess. Spiritual parenting our children is about remembering we cannot hold onto our children nor impose our visions upon them. They have their own paths, their own visions.

Loving my three children has been the easy part of parenting for me these last almost thirty-five years. Spiritual parenting them has been quite a challenge, though. It involves much praying, asking for guidance from the Divine. I am inspired by the message of Kahlil Gibran in "Children" from the book "The Prophet."

Children

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children."
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

As I read "Children" once again I am reminded to let go and allow my arrows to live their lives. Sometimes they fall on their face. I can be there to comfort them, to cheer them on as they soar once again with the grace of their own Higher Power leading the way. Thank you beloved Father, Mother God for blessing me with three arrows, my teachers.
