A beautiful, green lawn is one of the surest signs of spring’s arrival. Attaining that green lawn, however, requires a bit of work and dedication. Fortunately, by following the right steps, you can have your lawn looking great and still have time to enjoy all the other great spring activities.
Feed Your Lawn
Though it’s a good idea to apply slow-release fertilizer at the end of the growing season to give your grass what it needs during the long winter months, it’s also important to lay down some fertilizer at the beginning of a new growing season to jumpstart your grass’s growth. Since your grass will be growing quickly as it comes out of dormancy, it will need lots of nutrients to ensure it gets a good, strong start. Make sure to water your lawn after fertilizing to allow that fertilizer to penetrate deep down to the roots.Fill in the Holes
Though early fall is generally the best time to plant new grass, Spring makes a great time, as well. Cooler temperatures allow grass to grow without having to compete against weeds for water and nutrients. Just be sure to water and fertilize your new seedlings frequently to ensure they can overpower weeds as the weeds come out of dormancy. For quick results, you may want to consider using sod instead of grass seed to allow you to get a head start on the process.Remove Problems
Spring also makes a great time to prune trees and bushes you have around your property. This ensures that dead leaves and sticks don’t end up on your grass, robbing it of the sunlight it needs. This also ensures your plants and trees are able to grow well as they come alive with the warmth that spring brings.Sharpen and Tune-Up
With each spring comes the need to begin mowing your lawn again. As newly growing grass can be more sensitive to disease than grass late in the season, it’s especially important to ensure your lawn mower’s blades are well-sharpened. It’s also a good idea to clean your lawn mower and tune it up to ensure it’s operating at its peak efficiency. That way, the cuts it makes will be nice and clean, leaving little chance for diseases to begin to develop in your lawn.Enjoy That Vitamin D
Spring is a great time to finally get outside again and enjoy the warmth and the beautiful sunshine. Though there’s much to be done to get your lawn ready, it certainly beats being stuck inside on the many cold and gray days during winter. So, enjoy the work you’re doing and take the opportunity to get some nice, fresh air.Article author
