Straight Talk About Weight Loss And Food Industry Advertising
Written by Daniel Topkis, MS
Unknowingly, we are often victims of clever marketing. Most of us, no matter how savvy or intelligent we think we may be are impressionable and easily swayed.
Think of all the fancy labeled processed foods in a can, box or any type of packaging and then all the advertising/marketing that accompanies it. Now think of a boardroom with a large rectangular table and 5 - 10 advertising executives sitting around it. Now picture them trying to come up with the best ideas, the best advertising, the best packaging and the best slogans to market their products to you so that you buy them.
These products include sports and energy drinks, energy bars, diet bars, cereals, frozen entrees, fast foods and many others. There are plenty of people consuming these products because of their carefully crafted marketing: slick commercials, enticing magazine ads and fancy labels literally claiming they are good for us. It’s easy to believe, we know, but it’s a lie.
Many of the popularly advertised diet plans do this as well. They have you unknowingly sacrifice your health for the idea of losing weight to look good. Many give you their own packaged food and say, “follow our plan”. That’s their idea of healthy food, not mine and after you read this book, it won’t be yours either.
Sure it’s quick, easy and it may even taste good (sort of), but there’s no way that it’s healthy for you, regardless of what their label says or what celebrity is endorsing their product! In fact, we’ve looked at the ingredients and many of these diet foods are downright dangerous to your health. Most are a prescription for disease, especially heart disease.
Please take a moment to think about this. Do you think Mother Nature, in her infinite divine intelligence designed human beings as the only species on planet Earth to eat packaged processed foods?
Well, we hope you answered “no” to this question because that would be correct. The next time you reach for anything boxed, canned or in a package ask yourself, “Am I eating this because the food manufacturer in some way told me it was healthy?”
A fancy label or advertisement, no matter what it says (heart healthy, low cholesterol, low fat, etc.) does not mean that food/drink is healthy for you. Neither does celebrity endorsement or “sponsored by the American Heart Association” on the label. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. You could even say that the fancier and glitzier the label, packaging and advertising, the worse it is for you. Here's a quote to remember -- “One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to think the food industry has your health in its best interest.”
Place these words indelibly in your mind. Write it down if you have to and be sure to remember it the next time you see any celebrity endorsement, food advertisement or are reading the brightly colored fancy labels on packaged foods.
