Talent, It's not just in the Eye of the Beholder
Written by Odette Laurie
Talent. We know you have it, we know you got what it takes, but if we can't see it, hear it or live it, you don't have. Period. Kind of sucks doesn't it?
So what are you going to do about it? Are you going to do what you have been doing thus far? Are you going to stick your toe in and jerk it back if the circumstances aren't 'just right'? Are you going to lean in, take a sniff, and screw up your facial expression if the smell is a little 'off'?
Hey, I got an idea! Why don't you try something different? Stick your whole foot in and count to 10. Lean in and inhale deeply. That's right, it IS that simple.
Do you really want to be that untalented talented person? Do you still want to be her? The babe that lets fear and regret rule her life?
To some, it feels like jumping out of a plane with or without a parachute.
I know you think you have it all figured out, all the pros and cons to NOT taking that leap of faith. You have mulled the idea, concept, strategy and plan over and over and over and over again in your head. But you are exactly in the same boat as you were yesterday, yesteryear. How does that feel? So what are you going to do about it?
I'll tell you what you are going to do about it. You are going to sit on the edge of the plane, adjust your goggles, shift your weight, and dangle your legs. You are going to lean into the open sky, to the chance that something might shift in your life and let gravity do the rest. With this tiny action, you will stop being the person who was too scared to handle a risk, who never did anything interesting, who let your failures define who you are. You will become someone else, someone whose life is not over, but just beginning.
Leaning into the open sky will give you a wild ride, an exhilarating ride. This choice, to lean in with that slight shift in weight and change in direction, will change your life forever because it puts you into action.
Leaning in is all about taking the small action step that will let your momentum take over and move you forward. So pick up that phone, send that email, take that course, ask for help. Just commit and do it. What matters here is that you push or bulldoze through your feelings and get moving. You don't need to take a massive leap. What you do need to do is lean in and see what is on the other side of your cinder block called fear.
Do this without regard for how it will look, hear or smell. So open that door and let gravity pull you through. Good luck!
