One mistake we can make with meditation is reading books that offer too many complicated instructions and an excess of information too quickly. This results in the practice getting ahead of overwhelmed practitioners and causing them to become disheartened. Monks or nuns in the forest will receive a simple meditation from their teacher and not receive further teachings until they become familiar with the technique given, or until the teacher sees that progress is being made.

Since not all of us can practice in the forest, we must find a method of practice that integrates each phase of meditation at a natural, self-regulated pace that does not overload us with too much information. Since meditation reveals the unbelievable and heretofore hidden depths of one's being, it cannot be integrated in the same way that new knowledge is. The things that meditators see, and the conditions that they will encounter, generate an amazing change in perception, an unexpected revision that may alter one's entire destiny. For these reasons, powerful new insights such as these require integration at a pace that suits each practitioner's individual temperament.

It's best to begin with a very simple technique and then remain with that technique for some time, and do it as perfectly as possible. (Our Southwest Florida Insight Center website below offers free instructions). Although these instructions are very simple, they offer a holistic approach to the complete meditation experience, which if practiced for some time, can move a practitioner gradually and thoroughly from simple relaxation into the deepest, most profound areas of meditation and spirituality.

This is an opportunity to explore your own inner world, and possibly understand what spiritual enlightenment and coming face-to-face with God is all about. Instead of merely reading about enlightenment, you can actually work toward it. It is an amazing road, which is ultimately ineffable yet arguably the most important thing one can do for oneself and all other beings. It's where great things for humankind begin. nn nn
