We often talk about the importance of embracing and adjusting to change as well as learning to be open to new ideas and to recognize new opportunities. However, there also can be many challenging obstacles for us to overcome in transforming ourselves and our lives.
As much as it can be difficult to embark on a journey of change, it is equally challenging and important to find the strength to let go—of old habits, of old stories, of old things that we have gathered over the years, and especially of old emotions that we often hold onto even though we do not enjoy them. For many of us, the art of letting go can be one of the hardest lessons to learn: We too often tend to try to hang onto things to feel safe and in control.
We learn the art of letting go by practicing it.

You will be amazed at the transformation you can create in your life. You can start with a basic clearing of clutter in your home or office—a simple process that often, though, is neither emotionally nor physically very easy. Start with one part of your space—a closet, a corner, a bookshelf, a room. Start small, then take bigger steps. As you learn to let go and release your attachments to things you do not need anymore, you will become more aware of the need to let go to embrace more of what you want.
An introspective letting-go practice you can do taps into your inner wisdom to develop awareness of things you hold onto out of habit or as a result of inflexibility and resistance to change. Observe where you feel any tightness, tension, or discomfort. Ask yourself if there is something you may be holding onto—a feeling, an assumption, a belief—that restricts or limits you and does not enhance your life, preventing you from living your life joyfully. Visualize what you sense as an object, and feel it and connect with it deeply. Say to yourself, “I am releasing [this]. I am letting go of [this]. I know it is safe to let go of [this]. I know it is safe to surrender. I lovingly surrender.” Then visualize the object as it flies away into the distance and disappears. Notice how much lighter and freer you feel, how much more clarity you have, how much more joyful you feel. Remember this feeling and lock it securely within you. Go to this feeling every time you notice yourself trying to hold onto or control something.
When we learn to let go, we make room for new experiences, new love, new life—physically, emotionally, and energetically.
