If you never seem to know what your spouse or children's schedules look like, perhaps it's because you haven't taken the time to create a family calendar. Having one calendar devoted solely to your family's schedule can make the difference between chaos and organization in a household. Although each family member might already have their own calendar, a combined calendar will make it easier for everyone to keep track of family activities. If you've never created a family calendar before, here are some helpful tips to help you get started.

Paper or Digital?

In today's digitally connected world, paper calendars often seem woefully old-fashioned and outdated. However, depending on your family's needs and habits, you might just find that a paper calendar will work better than a digital one. Paper calendars are often easier for small children or family members who are uncomfortable with computers to use and understand. Many people also find that it's easier to simply jot something on a calendar than to sit down at the computer and make an entry in a digital calendar. However, if you and the rest of your family use smart phones or other electronic devices as a primary means of scheduling and staying organized, then a shared digital calendar might be the preferred solution.

Develop a Calendar Strategy

It's important to remember that just because you have a family calendar doesn't mean that everyone will automatically use it. In order to be useful, a calendar actually has to be used by everyone. It can be helpful to sit down and discuss this as a family so that everyone understands the calendar's purpose and importance. If everyone is in agreement as to how the calendar is to be used, it will be much more likely to be a useful family scheduling tool.

If you've decided to use a paper calendar, it's usually best to choose a large wall calendar that has spacious squares for each day of the month. This style of calendar will provide you with more space in which to write. This can be an important consideration for families with busy schedules. If you've decided to go the digital calendar route, be sure to choose a calendar application that works well when shared between multiple people. You'll also want to make sure that whatever calendar application you choose works well with everyone's electronic devices.

Stick to It

Once you've started your calendar, make sure to keep using it. As with any new habit, remembering to write your events and appointments on the calendar might be difficult at first. In the beginning, you could find that you or other members of your family might forget to write their appointments and events on the calendar. However, over time everyone will undoubtedly realize what a useful tool a family calendar can be. Once you've experienced the joy of not missing appointments or important events, you probably won't have any desire to go back to your previous disorganized system of keeping track of family member schedules.
