We've all heard those seemingly famous words - "You must exercise to lose weight", "You must exercise to burn fat", "Without exercise you will never have a tone body..." nnSO what do most people do? They put on their Nikes and take to the streets...nnWalking, jogging and running are by far and away the most popular forms of exercise on the planet. No doubt, because it requires very little to get you started. Just dig up a pair of running shoes and your all set to conquer the world.nnSo here's a question for you?nnWhy are there so many overweight walkers, joggers and runners? nnI'm talking about the people you see every day sweating it out up and down the local streets, sidewalks and alleys. You'd think they were training for the Olympics! And here's the surprising thing - it's not just the people who have recently begun to exercise...it's those who have been running around the block for the past two years. After all of that exercise you'd think they would have made some progress on their flabby midsections...nnSo what gives?nnPerhaps the reason why they haven't lost any weight is because exercises like walking, jogging and running are not the best weight loss exercises...The problem is that most who do these exercises do absolutely nothing else. They simply don the running shoes and expect to lose weight. These people have forgotten the most important ingredient for burning fat and losing weight...Muscle mass!nnQuite simply, if you have a low muscle mass you aren't going to burn much body fat. nnIt's a fact that most overweight individuals have very low muscle mass. Surprisingly enough, most overweight people have a higher percentage of body fat than muscle. What does this mean? It means that they can run and run and run, but they are not gonna lose any weight. Here's the golden rule of weight loss...You can't burn fat with fat! Fat requires no energy to be sustained. nnThe reason why you burn calories when you exercise and even while you're at rest is because of muscle. Muscle is living tissue that requires energy to be sustained. This means that whether you are resting or active, muscle is still burning calories. Why do you think that bodybuilders and athletes have very little trouble staying lean and fit? It's because they have a large percentage of muscle mass.nnSo what's the bottom line? Quite simply, if you want to walk, jog or run for exercise that's great...but you need to also do some strength training to build muscle mass. Without it your weight loss is going to be a complete struggle.n
