Where self-control is more of an abstract concept, a mental exercise, self-discipline is a physical, actionable concept. Self-discipline is the basis of self-control and therefore without discipline no measure of self-control alone will bring you the success you desire. Has there ever been something you truly wanted, but every time you began on the path, you just could not seem to keep it up? Have you ever started a diet, for example, and after a few days, it’s as if you’ve totally forgotten about it? Why is that? A lack of self-discipline. In order to succeed, I suggest creating positive habits through practicing self-discipline.

What is discipline then, and how do you build it? Discipline is the ability to choose a course of action and stick to it, to regiment yourself, your thoughts, and your choices, until you grow and acquire natural self-control. Discipline is practiced, just like self-control, through a process of conscious and deliberate decision making and action taking.

I believe in experiencing life as an incredible, passion-based ride. I also believe that you deserve happiness and success. Sometimes it can seem hopeless to even start towards a goal. It seems too far off, too unobtainable, especially if the steps require great control. But if you create a pattern of self-encouragement and discipline, you can have everything you’ve ever wanted.

As I’ve shared in my book LIVE YOUR PASSION, I share that one of my greatest mentors is Anthony Robbins.Anthony Robbins would likely agree that in order to achieve success through discipline, you must first make a decision. He teaches that a decision is only truly made when you take the first action to achieve it. Without that step, you only have a concept. When you convert ideas into actions, you are in the beginning stages of practicing self-discipline. When you continue to take conscious actions that lead you towards your goal, you are becoming truly self-disciplined.

Consider for example, if you wanted to lose weight. Deciding to lose weight is only the first step. From that time forward, you must account for what you eat and what exercise you do, every day. This takes significant discipline. When making a meal for yourself, you will have to decide what goes into the meal. You will have to decide to take all those spare minutes in the day and turn them into times for exercise. This is only an example, it highlights the key points of discipline. Discipline is making the right decisions at the right time, every time. When it becomes second nature, that is self-control.

Whatever your goals are—weight loss, better relationships, better lifestyle, more success in your profession, more education—learning to discipline your life will be an essential part of achieving those goals. Success is already yours by making the decision to be and if you are consistent, your reality will reflect your discipline and so much more. With every choice that presents itself, you have to decide to choose success, rather than the easy or more instantly gratifying choice. Self-discipline can help you achieve your goals, as long as you are willing to take those actions.

Anthony Robbins’ encourages us to make meaningful decisions. As your mentor, I strongly encourage you make meaningful decisions and remember that what we decide today, becomes the fruit of our future! Consider this as you plan your path to a happier and more fulfilling life.
