Maxwell, a highly reputed authority on leadership once said: “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position”. In this quote, John C. Maxwell identifies the very first secret to becoming an ideal leader. That is, you must have vision. Vision is the process of taking those things that occurred in the past, and carefully evaluating those things of the present. It is taking that information and structuring a mental image of how to improve upon that for the future. If you want to be an ideal leader, vision is an essential element to succeeding at your endeavors. Here, I will share with you numerous other secrets to becoming an ideal leader.
Every good leader knows and understands that vision is an essential when it comes to their success. However, they also know that a vision is not something that stands idle in their mind if it is to be successful. They must inspire others with the vision that they have. Once again, I will quote the leadership authority, John C. Maxwell on inspiration: “Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them”. This is what inspiration is all about when it comes to leadership. You must be close to the people that you lead, you must be able to relate to them, and all the while, you are way ahead of them enough to pull them in, and ultimately, motivate and inspire them! This is the second secret to becoming an ideal leader - having the ability to inspire others!
Did you ever wonder why the people that we know, or hear about being “great” leaders got that way? It is plain and simple. They know how to make the best use of what they have in order to create an end that they view as successful. Motivational speaker and minister, Joyce Meyer, once said: “Excellence – Take what you have and do the BEST with it”. If you are to become an ideal leader, you have to live, breathe, desire excellence. The only way that you can and will achieve excellence is to take the resources that you have – the people, the tools, the talents, whatever you can squeeze out – and do the BEST with them! If you are able to do this, success will be imminent and you, too, will be regarded as an ideal and GREAT leader!
The next secret to becoming an ideal leader is an easy, yet challenging one. This is taking risks. T.S Eliot, an American poet, and critic once said: “To win without risk is to triumph without glory”. In order to excel in leadership, we must be willing to take the risk in order to overcome the obstacles that our team faces, overcome the competition, and set our businesses apart from others out there on the market. We must encourage our team to take risks and become comfortable with them. If we are able to take a step in what seem the most risky direction and come out with a win for the team that we lead, it is then that we have achieved triumph in our glory! Richard M. Nixon said at one point: “If you take no risks, you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks, you win no victories”. If you keep this in mind, you can be an ideal and great leader!
As you can see, there are several secrets that will make you an ideal leader. These characteristics will pull out the ability to lead in any profession, any group of people, and do it successfully! Take these secrets; apply them, and just watch your successes and accomplishments sharply increase!
