Our small business clients are always interested in affordable SEO ideas to increase the traffic to their websites on a very limited budget. And we typically offer the same search engine optimization tip to all of our clients:
The easiest, most affordable SEO step you can make to drive traffic to your website is to add unique content on a regular basis.
Many of our small business marketing clients don’t like to hear that. They’re not natural born writers, and they believe adding content on a consistent schedule is going to be extremely difficult.
However, up-to-date, unique content is extremely important from an SEO perspective. The search engines love new and unique content. It’s a great way to set your website up as an authority, in both the search engine’s eyes and your site visitors’ eyes. Having lots of great content on your website gives you more opportunities to achieve better search engine rankings.
Adding content on a regular basis gives the search engine spiders a reason to come back and crawl your site. Getting your site crawled often is a good thing! It usually means more of your website pages will get indexed by Google, which means you have a better chance of showing up in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Don’t let the idea of adding content scare you off. High quality, unique content doesn’t have to be a 5,000 word masterpiece. In fact, your site visitors will appreciate if it isn’t a 5,000 word masterpiece. And the good news is, Google is basically looking for the same thing your site visitors are looking for.
No one, including Google, wants to spend 20 minutes reading what you have to say. In fact, Google does have a limit to how long it will spend on any one web page, which is a convenient coincidence, because so do your human website visitors.
So, when writing new content for your website, keep your articles or blog posts between 300 and 600 words. Don’t try to stuff your keywords into your articles or posts; write naturally and try to appeal to your human visitors. Believe it or not, Google is "smart" enough to recognize a natural writing style.
Make your article easy to scan. Use lots of white space, bullet points, and numbered lists. Use subheadings throughout the post so your readers can easily grasp the point of the article.
And above all, make your articles useful and informative. That's what your human visitors are after and that's what Google is after too.
