One of the difficulties I have heard most from my clients is “I know what I want to do but exactly how do I get there?”
Knowing what you want, your goal is the major principle of goal setting. You cannot get to where you want to go if you do not know where it is you want to go. First things first.
After knowing where you want to go, write the vision down and make it plain. Your future, what you will spend your time, money and energy on is too important to leave to your memory. In writing down the vision, it gives you the awesome ability to move it from your imagination to writing it down and seeing it in black and white. At this stage, your goal begins to take form.
The next step is to take the written vision and break the goal down into doable steps. The goal is always too big to get it done in just a few minutes. If it took a short amount of time, then just do it. Writing the doable steps will help in a two-fold way. The first thing it will do is to remove all if any attempt to cause you to fell overwhelm by the work ahead. The second thing it will do is allow you to have a path, a map to follow. It is like eating a whole pie, one piece at a time.
The next process is to take these doable steps and research, gather the resources and all information needed to achieve them. It is important to have correct information and the finances to reach each step. It will play against your passion, getting a running start but headed in the wrong direction. Correct information will give you the boost needed to get a favorable start. Counting the cost is imperative in reaching your goal. Do not allow failure to plan your finances derail you from your dream.
Then after the all resources and information is gathered, set dates as to when each doable step should be achieved. You may have heard that your goals should be measurable. This is exactly how you do that. Take the time to set a date to achieve each step. Give yourself the necessary time to get things done. Do not cut yourself too short as this will sometimes cause you to take shortcuts which may hurt you from gaining the results you desire. Do not set the date out too far, this will give you room to make excuses for each delay.
Get an accountability system in place. This is one of the most vital steps in seeing to your success. When we have a coach, a mentor, a mastermind group, it helps us to stay focused and be accountable to what we have or have not done. Accountability is like a fuel set to a fire and causes our passion to blaze. It gives us the energy to move forward with confidence. If we do delay or have a problem, we have a safety net to protect us from falling all the way down and leaving us enable of getting up again.
Check off each doable step as they are completed. When taking a road trip out of town, it is always good to see how many miles we have left to travel. When we see those distance to where we want to go getting closer our excitement increases. Also, when the destination is in sight, whatever we have experienced on our journey, whether good or bad, makes the trip that much more enjoyable. Check off each step and be sure to enjoy your journey.
Following this process will allow you to have a workable process to achieving your goals. Now you can say with confidence, I know what I want and I know how to get there.
