There are hundreds of people who flock to network marketing businesses as if it were manna from the heavens. As in any business, getting quality leads is likely to affect the extent to which such businesses are successful. Most of the wannabe network marketers are ill equipped to get quality leads because there are only the following few ways of getting leads for network marketing businesses:
1. Members Expected To Target Friends And Relatives:
Subscribers to network marketing programs are expected to speak to their friends and relatives to generate leads.
A friend might consent to become a member just because he is your friend. Very often, the friend may not have the money required to invest in the business. And ironically, you may end up lending him/ her the money. So, instead of getting an active lead who can be expected to work to build the business, you get a passive member, who does not qualify to be called a lead, and who has borrowed money from you, to boot.
In other cases, you may find that people you considered as friends no longer want to have anything to do with you. They find your efforts at building leads an invasion of their space and privacy. They start avoiding you, and sooner or later, express their desire to have nothing to do with you. In such cases, you end up without a lead, and a friend.
As far as relatives go, your relationship with them could be, at the best of times, tenuous. So, approaching a relative with a network marketing business proposition, even a close one such as a brother or sister, is fraught with risk. Not only are your chances of success low, your effort might prove to be the last straw in an already strained relationship.
2. Members Expected To Make Cold Calls:
Many network marketing programs force members to make cold calls. This simply means approaching someone (anyone) without making an appointment. The people you meet may not have any idea about why you want to meet them.
Even thick-skinned, experienced marketers don't exactly look forward to making cold calls; so, the experience is even tougher for people who have never sold anything in their lives. They can find cold calling a very harrowing experience.
If they find the experience of approaching a friend or relative to become a member thankless, cold calling could seem even worse. If a friend considers your effort an invasion of privacy, you can be excused if you think a stranger you have never met is not likely to be much more sympathetic.
3. Members Expected To Use Special Marketing Tools:
Network marketers give their members some marketing tools to generate leads. The members are expected to know how to use the tools. These tools are very often computer-based, such as a website, or automated follow ups, or audio and video postcards. Such tools could mean little to a person who may or may not possess basic computer literacy in the first place, and may consider a mouse as a rodent to be avoided and a trash bin as a useful device in a kitchen.
So, unless you identify an effective network marketing business that hand-holds you in generating quality leads, you may not go far in this business.
