They say that man’s greatest fear is public speaking; his second greatest fear is dying. Imagine that – most people would rather be dead than stand and give a speech! But did you know that man’s 3rd greatest fear is dying while public speaking?
No one has yet died on the podium to my knowledge. Certainly there have been heart attacks on stage while performing, but as far as the spoken word is conce
ed, no one has actually died while standing there. Your knees may be shaking, your voice may be quivering, your mouth may feel like the Sahara desert and you may have vomited before going on stage, but the good news is that it won’t kill you!
How important is public speaking today? More than you may realize. In decades past, the only people who gave speeches were the CEOs or the presidents of companies or clubs to which our parents or grandparents belonged.
Today, everyone is speaking. From astronomers and administrative assistants to zoologists and Zontians, the number of people involved in some form of public speaking is innumerable; and, the ability to be a dynamic public speaker can make all the difference in just how successful you are in your business life and even your personal life as well.
Public speaking is a wonderful means of networking. It introduces you to new people who get to hear about you and/or your business without having to say it individually to each and every person in the room. In fact, public speaking can be your best tool for getting exposure very quickly, a huge bonus if you are looking for a good ‘KickStart’ for your business.
How comfortable are you giving a speech or making a presentation? If your public speaking skills need work, it is to your advantage to research the subject; but, more importantly, you will gain more knowledge and experience from the actual practice of public speaking. Join Toastmasters, enroll in a public speaking class, or attend a presentation skills workshop. What you will learn in these situations will be much more valuable than any words you read on the subject or CDs you listen to on your way to work!
If possible, record yourself when you are speaking, then study the recording, and make the necessary changes. Seeing yourself in action is one of the best tools available for learning and improving; however, having someone coach you on your strengths and weaknesses is the best way to hone your public speaking skills.
Being able to deliver a dynamic presentation is a valuable asset that can have a tremendous impact on the success of your career. Don’t allow your fear or your nervousness keep you from making that all important presentation or speech.
