They say that the eyes are the window to the soul, and I believe this to be true. Don’t we all look at someone’s eyes to gauge whether they’re happy, sad, confused, fearful or surprised, etc? Of course, we do, and not one of us is immune to each one of these emotions at certain times in our lives.
It’s no surprise I see many different people in my work and each person comes with the expression of sadness in their eyes. Their demeanor and outward appearance may seem fine to someone who only sees the surface, but I want them to know that I see them… really see them.
I see pain, confusion, and sadness as people walk in the door seeking a connection to their loved ones who have passed on. As hard as I try with my many years of experience, I still can’t guarantee I can ease that pain. Yes, I may be able to bridge that gap between the living and those in spirit but I still can’t fill the empty hole in their heart. I don’t even know if time can do that. It’s as if the hole that’s in the heart is simply covered by scar tissue. It appears that is no longer there, but if you search you will find it deep within. Maybe in time we simply become numb to the pain. We don’t notice the raw emptiness that is in our lives to the depth in which we once did. This is a blessing.
Some people are touched so deeply by grief that it can be felt by others. That pain radiates throughout their being, permeating their entire physicality and spirituality. This is the pain that’s seen in their eyes and worn like a mantle about their shoulders, emanating from them like an aura of pain. Perceptible to those who choose to see.
