The Woman in White

I wrote briefly in my last article that my Father had been seeing “shadows” of people that weren’t there. He caught them out of the corner of his eye as it flashed by. This happened in different rooms at different times of the day.

One day this past month he called me and I asked him if he had seen any more shadows. He very matter of factly said, ‘No, but I did see a woman in a white dress pass in front of me.”

My jaw dropped as I listened to him tell me that he was eating dinner at about 7:15 and he was looking towards the bedroom. He saw a woman in a white dress emerge from his bedroom and walk past his line of sight and disappear. He said it happened in a flash of a second but he knew it was a woman in a white dress or gown.

Of course my first question was, “Was it Mom?” He couldn’t make out a face but he believes with all of his heart that it must be my Mother. I asked him if he could see a head and arms and he said yes. I wanted to know if it floated and he said it walked more on ground level.

“Did it freak you out?” I asked but Dad just laughed and said “ Why would it? I know it’s your Mom.”

What astonishes me more than he saw a spirit is that my Dad has never believed in ghosts. Ever.

My Mom and Dad lived in a house on The Cape that my friends and I all believed was haunted. Even my Mom was finally convinced. She was sitting in a chair in her bedroom and her dog was sitting on the wall to wall carpeted floor with a whiffle ball in between. The ball suddenly started rolling around the rug. “It was like someone was playing ball with the dog”, my Mom said. She couldn’t deny that the ball would not just start rolling randomly on a thick wool carpet for no reason.

Not my Dad though. “There must be some logical explanation”, he would always say. “If you see the ghost in the middle of the night wake me up, I’d love to see one.”

So, I know my Dad isn’t seeing this figure because he so desperately misses my Mom and wants to be ”visited” by her so badly. I asked him 3 months after she passed away if she had come to him and he said, “I don’t believe in that sort of thing.”

When I reminded him of this earlier conversation he said, “I guess it wasn’t that I didn’t believe but that I never had an experience like that before”.

Now he believes.
