Ideally, one must recite this prayer at a temple or in one's puja room. Then one must sit at a place to find tranquility and close the eyes. A ghee lamp must be lighted and incense sticks used to purify the environment.

Each Chaupai of the Hanuman Chalisa has a deep significance in one's life and existence. By chanting the opening hymn, hardships in one's life are said to be relieved, and a person receives strength and wisdom. Chanting the first Chaupai, which goes "Jaya Hanuman Gyan Gun Saagar... " introduces a person to divine knowledge, and illuminates the mind and soul. Similarly, the third hymn, "Mahavir vikram Bajrangi... " lets one overcome darkness and guides one towards the right path in life.
