Self-care is something most people don’t practice on a regular basis. Think about it, when was the last time you did something solely for yourself? Whether it’s a massage, focusing on more positive thoughts, or taking a vacation, we all need self-care. We can come up with a long list of why we don’t have time to indulge in self-care, but self-care is actually more important than we realize. Contrary to popular belief, self-care is not selfish nor will it make you lazy. In fact, the more you practice self-care, the more productive you will be. The following three self-care tips are easy enough to start right away and will put you on the path to success and overall well-being.

Positive Self-Talk

Positive self-talk is not the first idea that comes to mind when thinking about self-care. Instead, most people think of taking an extravagant vacation or cruise. While a vacation is nice, many of us don’t have the luxury of immediately packing up and leaving. In order to get started right away, positive self-talk is a great first step.

Positive self-talk helps to reduce the negative chatter and stop us from beating up on ourselves. You know that friend who’s always negative and judgmental? Sometimes when it comes to ourselves, that friend is us. We can be our own worst enemy. Commending yourself for a job well done and giving yourself a pat on the back can go a long way and stop negativity in its tracks.

Listening to Yourself

You might be wondering how listening to yourself has anything to do with self-care. Take a moment to reflect on a time when you had a gut feeling about something but chose to do the opposite. What happened? Odds are, the situation didn’t go well, which is why listening to yourself is key. Listening to your gut can help you avoid major pitfalls and bad situations. We are all equipped with an inner guidance system that can help us authentically navigate our lives. Listening to yourself is one of the greatest forms of self-care you can practice.

Uprooting Unhelpful Beliefs

Our beliefs are powerful because they shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Most of what we do is based on our beliefs. If you have a belief that is unhelpful, particularly one about yourself, it can be incredibly detrimental. Imagine how a belief like not being good enough can negatively impact your life. Such a belief can cause you to overcompensate and be untrue to who you are. Being mindful of your beliefs is the first step to uncovering them and getting back on track to success and happiness.

The Bottom Line

Self-care can be practiced in many ways across different areas of your life. Self-care can be physical, mental, or spiritual. The greatest forms of self-care are those that you can consistently practice on a daily basis that have long-lasting effects. In addition to getting a massage or planning your next vacation, remember to incorporate positive self-talk, listening to yourself, and uprooting unhelpful beliefs. A better you leads to a better life.

“She” arrived at a small boutique in the lower Gibson’s, located on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. It was a cool and crisp evening and the sun was beginning to set. The store, Costal Creativity, welcomed “She” and “He” in and presented itself as a playful stage for the creations of local artists. As “She” entered, a large tree like structure filled with these expressive hats captured her attention. The variety of textures and colors created a canopy of fanciful head adornments. “She” intently studied each hat, wondering which one would come home with her someday.r
