Leaders and followers need to understand the nature of communication in developing a good cross communication strategy. When communicating with people abroad, you'll need to know both the strategy and structure in cultural and communication patterns. As we encounter the possibilities of wars, it appears that some international disputes could be resolved by effective cross-cultural communications.

There are many cultural questions that need to be considered by a leader. Have we developed a strategy to foster cross cultural ideas and opportunities? Do we have a respectful and humane system and procedure to identify and resolve cross-cultural conflicts? What do we need to know about each other to communicate with excellence cross culturally? How do we respect differences in our communication?

Some people have difficulty with other countries due to lack of understanding about cross-cultural communication. There are guidelines all leaders must consider before doing business in another country.

  • Select an individual that is capable of working in foreign culture. Train them on how to read and speak the foreign language and understand cultural sensitivities and ways that are different form their own experience.
  • Learn the culture of the country. Leaders must understand the non-verbal communications of the foreign country, because foreigners tend to use the silent language. That's why leaders need to incorporate the cross-cultural training to be effective not only in one country but also to the other country that has the different culture.

Leadership is an opportunity given by a deserved individual. Maintaining this position can be possible if you are going to consider the cultural and communication process of your co-leaders and the country or organizations you are going to lead. Being a leader is a privilege and obligation and continual professional development is necessary to be a successful leader.

Here are helpful suggestions for leaders to consider.

  • Learn how the source of culture best receives the communication. It can be done by instructing leaders to find the best way to communicate the message.
  • Regularly train the leaders. It is important that the leaders be taught in orientation sessions and in ongoing training so that it can avoid misconceptions and inappropriate conduct in the workplace.
  • Practice the non-verbal communication. It helps leaders to be able to communicate and understand the silent language of other people.
  • Never hesitate to ask for help when developing policies and procedures. Guidelines help us find sure-fire ways for leaders to speak directly with colleagues and clients from diverse cultures.
  • Avoid Jargon and slang. Jargon is definitely a challenge. This is the reason why some leaders have a difficulty in leading an organization because the members cannot clearly understand them.
  • Stick to business. The best way to create an environment that all people of all cultures can participate in is to ensure that the company's mission and goals are communicated clearly.
