The most important tag of a website in terms of online marketing and search engine optimization is the often misused title tag. This title tag is the first bit of actual text that the search engine bots and spiders look at in determining what a web page is actually about. Over and over again, I see title tags online that are essentially wasted space. A proper title tag should include the use of a highly searched keyword phrase and / or a couple of pertinent keywords and possibly a location if the website is built for a local business. Let's look at some examples.

The first example, and a very poor example, is a title tag that simply states "home." Is that what your webpage is about … “home?” Secondly, the actual name of a website or business is a poor use of this valuable space. The title tag should be eight to ten words and should be composed around at least and possibly two pertinent keywords or phrases. The Google Keyword Tool is a free online tool that can be used to check pertinent keywords that would be searched for your particular websites subject matter.

Another bad example would be something like, "Welcome to JazzArtistry.com” The word "welcome" is NOT a keyword that anyone searches for and neither is the word "to." JazzArtistry.com is the actual website and no one will be searching for that particular term unless they are already aware of the website name. A much better title tag for this particular website would be, "Jazz artist, jazz musicians, jazz orchestras, jazz combos and jazz festivals." By using these keyword phrases, you are actually utilizing strong keywords ...”jazz” ... and, you are identifying that your website features artist, musicians, orchestras, combos and festivals. Anyone searching for “jazz artist;” jazz musician;” “jazz orchestras;” “jazz combos;” or “jazz festivals” have a much higher chance of actually finding your website than if you used … “Welcome to JazzArtistry.”

The actual title tag could then be repeated again within your content tag; your keyword tag and at the beginning of the actual text on your page via an H1 tag or at the beginning of your first paragraph.

Keywords and key phrases are very important as is their placement on your websites index page if you want your website to have any chance of ranking high on Google; Yahoo; Bing and other pertinent web searches. Need help? Contact me!
