From what is known about the sport, most parents would probably not allow their children to play rugby. They might think that the extreme physical nature of the sport would be too much for their kids. Indeed, bruises and injuries are common in rugby games. There is a milder alternative, though, for children who still might want to try the sport. This variation is called touch rugby. The basic difference between touch rugby and traditional rugby is the accepted defensive movement while the ball is in play. In traditional rugby, players on defense are allowed to tackle the opponent in possession of the ball. A lot of things can go wrong during the tackle, and the slightest inaccuracy can lead to serious injuries. On the other hand, tackles are replaced by ‘touches’ or ‘tags’ in touch rugby. Players only need to tag their opponents to indicate that they have been ‘tackled. Touch rugby can be a productive activity for kids. Aside from the less intense movements required of the players, there are several other benefits that children can enjoy from touch rugby games. Fun Physical Fitness While touch rugby is a gentler version of its traditional counterpart, players still have to be in good condition to be successful in the sport. The level of activity in touch rugby promotes bone and muscle strength, as well as great body coordination. It encourages children to be physically fit, and to achieve this while enjoying themselves in their youth rugby league. Learning the Basics It can also be said that touch rugby serves as a primer on rugby at an advanced level of difficulty. Children are introduced to the basics of the sport in a youth rugby league. What they learn there, they can use in the future when they’re ready to pursue traditional rugby as a hobby or profession. Positive Values Certain positive values are also ingrained in children while playing in a youth rugby league. First, there is honesty. Since a touch is more discreet than a tackle, the players must readily admit that they have been tagged. Second, there is the value of teamwork. Touch rugby is not a one-man show. The team must pull together in order to win. Lastly, there is discipline. As with any other sport, there are rules to be followed in touch rugby, which children have to play by in the name of fairness.
