So you've identified that you or someone you love needs help. So what then are the options are far as alcoholism addiction treatment and treatment for drug addiction?

In my opinion, you should always try and make rehab/treatment program your first choice. You'll typically spend 4-6 weeks getting clean and off the drugs/alcohol. (The length of your stay can vary depending on the treatment center you go to)

Why would rehab or an inpatient program be my first choice? Because it not only helps you detox - but with its intensive therapy and counselling will help you deal with a lot of the emotional baggage that causes you to drink and take drugs.

Getting that same level of quality care and treatment is much harder if you don't go to rehab. And just as importantly, a good rehab or treatment center not only helps you get clean, but prepares you for a life outside its walls in terms of equipping you to maintain your sobriety once you leave.

Don't let thinking rehab or treatment is unaffordable stop you. Yes, you get the expensive/fancy one's the rich and famous go to that you read about in magazines - but there are many different types. A lot of treatment centers are government subsidised, so whatever your financial position, make sure you do your research, because I'm sure you will find an option that makes it possible for you to go.

I honestly believe rehab should always be your first choice, but what are your other options? You could try addiction and alcoholism self-help approaches, which would involve you working on the spiritual, emotional and mental aspects of yourself - and therefore provide enormous potential for growth and transformation. I don't have space to go into detail here (check out my website for that). I still think however that rehab is your best bet (at least initially) - because trying to do it yourself is so much harder.

Alte
ative Alcoholism Treatment and Addiction Treatment options are becoming increasingly popular. I definitely think there is a place for alte
ative alcoholism and addiction treatment - but I would recommend using these in conjunction with a more mainstream or traditional way, especially to begin with at least - because again it is that much harder doing it without the help of addiction treatment professionals.

Therefore when considering treatments for drug addiction or alcoholism addiction treatment options - make getting into a treatment center/rehab your priority. Things like alte
ative alcoholism treatment and addiction/alcoholism self-help methods can play a massive part - but going to rehab will just give you that head start, and so make recovery that much easier.

If you live with an alcoholic you will almost certainly feel shame. Some people will experience it to a very high level others less so but almost everyone who lives with an alcoholic experiences it to some degree. You will probably feel anxious that people will discover your secret, that they will judge you and, inevitably, will find you unacceptable to be around decent people. Seeing it written down like that it probably seems stupid. How could anyone feel that.

Myth #1: Drug addiction is voluntary behavior. A person starts out as an occasional drug user, and that is a voluntary decision. But as times passes, something happens, and that person goes from being a voluntary drug user to being a compulsive drug user. Why? Because over time, continued use of addictive drugs changes your brain -- at times in dramatic, toxic ways, at others in more subtle ways, but virtually always in ways that result in compulsive and even uncontrollable drug use. Myth #2: More than anything else, drug addiction is a character flaw.
