You have to hand it to Hollywood! Sometimes I think L.A. is truly still the "City of Angels." Every now and then a film comes along at just the right time to uplift and encourage us, to set us right on our paths. During these trying times we are gifted with Julie and Julia, a film about two women who’s passion and purpose leads them to extraordinary success.

Many would think that such a life would be pure “cush” but as with all of life, we see it’s really a mixed bag. Both women face a variety of trials. Because their passion and purpose is so intrinsically connected to who they are at the deepest level of their being, and because their dreams were just big enough, they ultimately succeed.
Besides a dream sufficient in size, there are 3 other components demonstrated in the film proven to make change possible and sustainable.

The first component is to have relationships with others who believe in you and your dream. In the movie, significant others and good friends take on this role. Mentors, coaches and communities of those with similar values also qualify. Perhaps being immersed in a country where food is a national treasure was the community Julia needed to stay profoundly connected to her passion.

Another variable that really helps when faced with adversity is the ability to reframe a situation or a problem. A classic example is the idea that within every obstacle there lies an opportunity.

Is it possible your problems are there because a very powerful aspect of your being is wanting you to make some healthier more sustainable choices for yourself?
There is a Hawaiian word, “kuleana” that means “your contribution to the health and wealth of all who live on the land together.” What might be your satisfying labor of love that would make a unique contribution to the whole.

Julia’s husband Paul asks her what it is she really loves to do and she jokingly answers, “I love to eat!.” Having someone who can ask you empowering questions, framed the right way, will help you get to your answer. The answer is uniquely yours. You won’t find it in a book. You will find some clues to getting to it by watching “Julie & Julia.”

Finally, the other critical element necessary to sustain a successful transformation, is repetition. We see this again and again throughout the movie. The onion scene demonstrates Julia Childs tenacity and desire to excel in spite of the odds. Julie’s persistence is also endearing and a great reminder that “ove
ight success” stories are an illusion.

Having a support system of friends, families and mentors is critical during times of transition. Seeking what’s “right” about this in any given moment relieves stress and frees up your mental energy for more empowering pursuits. Repeating new good habits will keep you moving forward one step at a time. Gratitude always helps!
Learning to joyfully follow your inner guidance system is truly what sets extraordinary success apart from a lifetime of just going through the motions. Focusing on that which inspires you will make your journey more enjoyable. When you find an empowering book or a movie like “Julie& Julia”, a little repetition goes a long way in helping you absorb the lessons that can make life a little easier.
