New autobiography recounts author’s determination in face of hardship
Up From the Ruins by Bruce Wayne Sullivan portrays a childhood marred by violence and lifelong commitment to hard work
BILOXI, Miss. – Up From the Ruins, an autobiography by Bruce Wayne Sullivan, tells the true story of how the author overcame substantial obstacles on his way to successful adulthood.
With an alcoholic father moving his family around the country in a desperate effort to make ends meet, Sullivan learned at an early age that life would not be easy. Strong family bonds disrupted by episodes of violence made home life difficult and Sullivan struggled to achieve in school. Adulthood is no easier but Sullivan’s dogged persistence keeps him moving forward. Throughout the book, Sullivan never blames others for his difficulties, choosing rather to focus on improving circumstances through his own efforts.
“Although according to some I was doomed to fail, I never gave up,” says Sullivan. “Hopefully my story can convince others that the choices we make can help us to reshape our lives.”
According to Sullivan, there is an urgent need for Americans to remember the time-honored values of individual effort and commitment to a goal. In Up From the Ruins, Sullivan recognizes at an early age that nothing should be taken for granted and that he will have to work hard to get what he wants out of life. Focusing on the important life lessons learned along the way, Sullivan provides a personal perspective on overcoming life’s challenges.
