If you want to get consistent media coverage (instead of your competitors), it’s important to make yourself an expert in your industry. You want to be someone the media thinks of when they need a quote, source, or guest. In order to do that, you need to be able to stand out in the crowd and show that you are the master of your industry. How do you do this?

Here are three tips to help you stand out in the crowd:

Tip #1 – Niche Your Expertise

To get media exposure, present yourself as an expert in a specific niche in your industry. I have a friend who uses the term “nichetize.” That’s a brilliant concept and one that will help you standout in your industry. Nichetize what you do so you become the expert in that specific area of your expertise. There are, for example, thousands and thousands of business coaches. What can you do to make yourself standout? What expertise do you provide that no one else in your industry offers? Is there a way in which you work with clients that is different from how others do it? Be a one-of-a-kind in your industry to stand out in the crowd.

Tip #2 – Provide Great Content

I sound like a broken record on this but content is king, especially on the Internet where people are constantly searching for information. Providing great content, on a regular basism allows people to find you and let’s you stand out from your competitors who aren’t providing content at all. Whether it’s a written blog or videos, providing valuable content pertaining to your industry is a great way to help you stand out of the crowd and let potential customers, and the media find you and view you as the expert.

Tip #3 – Get Active on Social Media

You should be tweeting, posting, sharing your work on social media. This is really important because journalists are all over social media, especially Twitter. If you are reaching out to them about story ideas or commenting on something they’ve written about, and they check you out and see that you are actively posting about your industry on social media, you instantly appear credible. It’s astounding to me how easy it really is to connect with a jou
alist on social media. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to connect with and build relationships with people in the media.

So there you have it… three simple ways to help you stand out in the crowd and make your mark on your industry. When you are viewed as an expert, it’s much easier to get regular media coverage.

I'll explain my sensationalized "beer foam" headline in a minute, but we need some background first. A recent article written at ScienceDaily.com, which appears to be based on a press release from a biochemist at Brandeis University, touts the following headline: "First Large-Scale Formal Quantitative Test Confirms Darwin's Theory of Universal Common Ancestry" http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100512131513.htmrnr

“Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one.” - Benjamin Franklin This is a great quote that succinctly sums up the problem with money - namely you can never have enough of it due to our human inclination toward greed and avarice. I believe that the only way to break the back of greed in your life is by giving away a portion of your funds.

I got to thinking about the concept of “happiness” the other day and decided that I will no longer pursue it. Don’t get me wrong, the “…pursuit of happiness…” is very quotable, it sounds great and looks great on paper – especially when that paper happens to be the Declaration of Independence, which is where the phrase is found and was signed by our forefathers.
