The majority of overweight or obese people who go to hypnosis have followed numerous diets with generally poor or very temporary results, which is why it is widely accepted and widely followed.
How does hypnosis work to lose weight?
Behavior modification techniques (in this case food) in clinical hypnosis called behavioral hygiene (food) is as complex as it is efficient. The hypnotherapy to lose weight must fight an enemy congenital or genetic predisposition of our brain, whose leaders are genetically programmed:
It is the area of the brain responsible for the reward. Its neurons connect with numerous regions of the brain, to which it releases dopamine (the neurotransmitter of pleasure and reward). The ventral tegmental area is basic in hypnosis to lose weight since it is responsible for associating pleasure with certain foods, which will eventually end up in long-term memory.
When we say that a certain food " we like a lot ", in reality, what we are expressing is that the ventral tegmental area is releasing dopamine to various areas of the brain associated with that food. If this circumstance occurred a long time ago (the first time you ate this food), it is your long-term memory that is reproducing what learned.
Unfortunately for us, the ventral tegmental area is genetically programmed to release dopamine when we eat foods high in fat and sugar. Why is it programmed like this? It is what we call a recessive gene, that is, it does not make much sense today where food is bought in a supermarket and prepared in your kitchen, or it is bought already prepared. It has not always been this way. In the evolutionary era of this gene that we still have, if you wanted to eat something, you had to hunt it first.
Although modern man evolved obtaining important skills for hunting (cognitive processes in the elaboration of complex tools, social processes of group cooperation, etc.) the desired hunting was not always achieved. As carnivorous predators (first only hunting, then also fishing), our favorite foods also learned to defend themselves against us (before devising the breeding of animals in captivity, or farmyard animals) so that returning empty-handed was not uncommon.
At this time of evolution, several genes were incorporated into our programming, including 2 that complicate our lives a lot today. The first program this ventral tegmental area to generate dopamine if the food is rich in fat. Why? the answer is simple. Another gene also developed in the same evolutionary epoch, accumulates excess fat (in the abdominal area and nearby areas) for when hunting had not been achieved and therefore food was scarce. At the same time, our metabolism is programmed to consume this accumulated fat in times of scarcity.
It also does practically the same thing with sugars. Why?. The answer is also simple, glucose is essential for our brain, without it many processes are hindered or prevented. Naturally, this gene could not foresee that in the current times of our industry, processed foods would take advantage of this genetic programming to incorporate large doses of sugar (a classic example would be sugary soft drinks, but in general all industrial foods).
Our metabolism cannot withstand such high doses with the sole purpose of generating dopamine (pleasure and reward) when eating them and repeating their purchase, so in the end, we cause a DNA mutation (generally from the age of 50) with diabetes Mellitus of type II. If this has already happened in our predecessors.
Reprogramming the ventral tegmental area so that it stops doing (or does it with less intensity) something that it is genetically programmed to do in terms of dopamine secretion associated with certain foods, is not an easy task. It is so difficult for a certain therapy to overcome the genetic programming of the ventral tegmental area, that few succeed, being hypnosis to lose weight the one that achieves the most important success in this regard.Article author
