Resume is a vital tool in your job search. However, while discussing the importance of a resume, we have to give equal importance to every element associated with it. Not too long ago, a one-page resume was considered as an ideal resume. People rarely dared to break this unwritten rule and those who did, risked their job progress. Nevertheless, new guidelines in the job market suggest that a resume should be long enough to incorporate the necessary details that compel recruiters to call you for an interview. rnWhether you are writing an undergraduate student resume or a professional resume, the age-old question, how long should your resume be will plague you. Many candidates are concerned about how many pages would make your resume really long, and what length is too short. Well, as mentioned earlier the guidelines have changed over a period of time, but still, if you expect to receive the exact figure, as to how many words or how many pages make an ideal resume, you are destined for disappointment. There is no hard-and-fast rule that defines uniform length for every resume. Everyone has different factors to include while building the resume. Following are a few guidelines to help you to decide the length of your resume and what elements should go into it. Facts to Consider While Deciding Resume Length Although, your resume is your marketing tool that you have to use to market yourself in the job market, but still remember that it is not an autobiography, Thus, you must keep your resume concise and include the key skills mandatory for the position targeted. Do not hesitate to slash down the past experience that is not in sync with the current position applied for. Ensure that whatever is included in the resume, helps you sell your credentials to the prospective employer. A resume length is a relative term and differs as per every individual. Remember one thing that a recruiter is only going to give a cursory glance to your resume and before he decides to trash your resume or pile it to the 'may be' list, but you have to do your job. Thus, list all the key selling points as they should be easily visible to a recruiter. Consider One-Page Resume in Following Scenarios If you are a fresher, or a professional with less than 5-7 years of experience, keep the resume length to one page. In case, you are seeking a fundamental career change and the previous experience is not related to the new job position. Consider Two-Page Resume in Following Scenarios If you are applying for a professional executive position, and have substantial experience of about 10 or years, you may build a two-page resume. If the new position applied for, requires mention of technical skills and professional responsibilities handled in details. However, while spawning the information over two-pages, remember that you still have to focus on the first page and ensure all vital and important information goes on the first page. What is the ideal resume length can be a confusing question. If you are a student, check out for the student resume format and build a one-page resume.
