The low carb diet is generally eating foods that are low in carbohydrates. Protein filled foods such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs and cheese would fit under this category. Fruits, bread, rice, cereal and the normal “no-no” items such as cookies, cake, candy, chips, popcorn, and you get the idea on the rest, are not to be eaten at all.
But before we go any further, let’s get our weight loss research done. What are carbohydrates anyway? They are one of three different components of food that supply energy or calories to the body, the other two being proteins and fats. There are three categories of carbohydrates. They are sugars, commonly known as simple carbohydrates, starches, known as complex carbohydrates, and fiber.
That doesn’t sound bad, why do we have to avoid this on the low carb diet? It really has to do with digestion. Certain foods are digested and used more immediately than others. Simple carbohydrates digest faster and therefore not all of it is used right away and the rest is stored in the body, mainly as fat. Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, digest slowly and so most of it can be used by the body as it needs it.
So that would explain why there has been a variety of different low carb diets. The granddaddy of them all would have to be the Atkin’s Diet. The diet does not really go into the distinction of the two types of carbohydrates. At first, there is a strict restriction in the amount of carbohydrates that one would take in. Then there is a gradual inclusion of more carbohydrates. The South Beach Diet is similar but the inclusion of foods is based on the glycemic index. In essence, the lower a food item is on that scale the better its chances of being included in the diet. There are other diets that fit in this category.
I was on this diet and did lose quite a bit of weight but the menu tends to be repetitive and boring. I ate bacon and eggs for a week straight once. The bright side is you can use as much butter and oil you want without much worry. Also, you can go for it on the mayonnaise. Condiments are great ways to get over the blues. And the great news is you can lose weight fast. The other great advantage to eating this way is that after a few days your cravings for carbohydrates diminishes and it is a lot easier to eat that plate of bacon and eggs. But eventually you’re going to want some toast to go with your meal.
I have to say that at first on any of these diets you will be restricted to proteins, fats and limited carbohydrate foods such as leafy vegetables.
However, including complex carbohydrates into a diet does work to create healthy weight loss and set a pattern for the rest of one’s life. In all honesty, while I was on the diet I thought there had to be a better way and a more nutritional way to go about it. I would highly recommend you check out this website. It does have a better way.
