What is Depth and Breadth in Psychotherapy and How does Energy Psychology Enhance Either?

How will improving my self-image improve my life? Why do I need to resolve my “mother and father” issues? What does my relationship with my boss have to do with my marriage? What does my back pain have to do with my bank account? On the face of it, perceiving psychological connections between various aspects of life and personal history which seem separate is not high on most people’s agendas. In today’s world, people often seek a specific solution to target a specific problem. This view has been reinforced by the mental health model preferred by 3rd party insurance providers.
The movement in the mental health profession toward evidence-based methods let to a general preference for cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) which had been heavily researched and found reliably effective. CBT’s roots lie in behavioral science, cognitive science, and clinical research; it offered a scientific approach and reductionist model for understanding human problems. The focus on symptoms alone rather than early experience, family dynamics, or unconscious processes that cannot be proven to exist appeals to a materialistic, Newtonian worldview whereby everything can be quantified.
There is no doubt that the integration of behaviorism with cognitive science and philosophic debate –usually adding the Rogerian client-centered approach and attitude of unconditional positive regard for the client-- has resulted in a beneficial hybrid that has become the staple of counseling, psychotherapy, and self-help. This general model has many variations and broad applications.
However, this same reductionist viewpoint tends to eschew depth in preference for measurable, incremental improvement of symptoms. It does not even seek a full resolution or “cure” of a condition, but rather moderate improvement based on diagnosing and correcting cognitive errors and dysfunctional behavior, which in turn exacerbate troubling emotions. It’s goal being to improve the cognitive processes and behaviors related to a psychiatric condition without addressing deep-seated, core issues underlying these problems.
Every revolutionary change in scientific understanding came by means of a leap, not a crawl. Allowing ourselves to leap from a Newtonian paradigm to Relativity and quantum theory paradigms makes room for a holistic view of human experience. Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine can provide an ideal bridge between the two.
Be Set Free Fast™, an integrative energy psychology methodology that orchestrates deep and broad changes by aligning our conscious awareness, active intention and passive expectancy with the “behind-the-scenes” agency of the subconscious mind. Like many EP methods, BSFF mobilizes the subtle energy system and all involved biological subsystems making up the “hardware and software” of the psyche. Unique to BSFF is its alignment of conscious and subconscious processes, a feature that enhances the scope of its effectiveness to the extent that tapping or touching meridian points is not necessary.
I had been teaching a client Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (a type of CBT) , and she had come to a temporary impasse in her progress with it. The better she got at identifying core irrational beliefs effecting multiple areas of her life, the weaker and less effective her attempts to refute them became; she felt overpowered by the resonance of those deep-seated beliefs she’d uncovered.
Upon applying her BSFF cue word, the belief she’d identified lost its power for her. After a 5-minute interval of BSFF (we also treated some other things that came up), Susan was easily able to identify the flaws in her core irrational belief, replace it with a more realistic and beneficial one, and act on it with the support of her cue without any additional coaching. Weeks later, she reported that her response to an event similar to one that triggered her before was not even challenging for her.
This kind of result, while never a guarantee, is not unique for energy psychology. We get frequent reports of deep-seated problems resolving comparatively quickly and easily compared with talk therapy. We believe this is because energy psychology, when skillfully applied, has the power to access the recesses of our minds and hearts to extinguish the internal causes of self-limiting patterns at their source without having to do an “archeological dig” to find them or spending sessions to explore them.
