Whatever Happened to Directory Submission SEO
Legacy signals

One of the major things that people used to do when attempting to do SEO just a few years back is to submit to every directory possible. This usually meant that they would garner a lot of back links that would help them gain ranking on the search engines, and this ranking in turn would bring them business. Therefore, directory submissio
SEO was something that was very involved and very applicable to that time period.
However, what happened was that the search engines found out that the directories were being used in this way and as many other professional search optimizers have said, when a business model is scalable, as far as search optimization goes, then that scalability will be cut down by the search engine. This is because they do not want people gaming their system, therefore, directory SEO is not as popular as it used to be because it started to be less effective. This does not mean that businesses do not try use directory SEO anymore, it just means that they usually get people who are just beginning to try to get SEO for their web site(s) and they do not understand that directory SEO is no longer a viable business option.
As said before, scalability is a major problem for the search engines because they do not want people gaming their algorithm to gain better rankings. If they allowed this, that would mean that people who put up spam on the Internet would be able to get good rankings on the search engines without much effort just by spending money, and people who work hard to put good content on the Internet would not do well at all. Therefore, the search engines have put a limit on how much directory SEO means to regular SEO, however, this is not to say that there are not some directories with a lot of power that the search engines still see as relevant. These include Yahoo, Best of the Web, and Dmoz, however, each of these are edited by humans, which search engines like, because human-edited directories are usually high quality.
Therefore, these search directories have a lot of power. This is not to mention that they are some of the oldest directories on the web, and therefore, they have a lot of trust from the major search engines that exist. Therefore, if a person is trying to go for directory SEO, then they will do very well to have those types of links in their profile. Moreover, when I say those types of links, I mean links from the big directories, like Yahoo, Dmoz, and Best of the Web. This is the best way to get good ranking quickly because each of these rankings are hard for spammers to get, and therefore, they send a major social signal that the web site is reputable.
