This question drives people bonkers much of the time.
Along with that question comes these:
What was I created to do?
What am I really passionate about?
Do I even have a purpose?
Why am I so miserable?
What the hell am I doing?
I have certainly wrestled with this question various times and came up empty plenty of times. Finally I realized that there is no right or wrong answer and I also discovered that my purpose is simple. Be me.
My purpose is to love me and be me. From there, I allow creative energy to take over and watch my life unfold in awesome ways day in and day out. It’s not as difficult as I made it out to be. Of course there is more to it than this, but you get the gist.
How do I discover my purpose?
It’s a valid question. Your answer could be MANY things.
Maybe you are to cook delicious meals at my favorite restaurant (which makes me happy) and while you are creating fantastic food, your insides are squirming with delight!
Maybe you are to teach high schoolers about interesting people groups around the world, and as you do, you feel passion gushing through your veins.
Maybe you are to stay at home and raise your children with love and patience, and as you do, you feel completely fulfilled.
There are many “maybe’s”. Here are 10 questions to answer to help you in discovering your life purpose. Get out a piece of paper. Yes, real paper. Find a quiet spot. Yes, completely quiet. Scribble your gut honest answers down and see what you come up with.
1. If you could do anything right now that you know would make you smile, what would it be?
2. List your top 2 talents/skills.
3. What did you excel in as a child/teenager?
4. What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
5. If you had one million dollars, what would you be doing with your days? Would you still work the same job? If not, would you pursue a new career?
6. If you had to teach a course, what would it be?
7. What couldn’t you live without?
8. What do you want said at your funeral about you?
9. What do you stay up late doing?
10. What brings tears to your eyes?
11. What do you want your children to remember most about you?
12. What do you love to learn about?
13. What gets your creativity juices flowing?
14. What would you do if failure were not an option?
15. What do people say about you?
There you have it. Answer these questions and take some time to contemplate on your answers. You don’t have to know specifics. Your purpose is not a one liner. It can be many things on many levels. If you still draw a blank, do the things in life that I believe are EVERYONE’S purpose:
Love those close to you with a deep love.
Romantacize your partnerïrnGive, give, give. Give your time, give your money, give your crap that you don’t need to people who need it, give a smile, a hug. Do something every day that adds value to humanity.
Be respectful.
Honor your parentsïrnBe responsible.
Be honest.
Take care of who you are responsible for.
Laugh.
Do things that make you happy.
Discover the awesomeness of you.
