Social media privacy is not best learned from the social media systems themselves. This is because the social media systems will always do what is in their best interests and not the user's best interest. Every business is in business to make money; therefore, many of the social networks will not make changes until they absolutely have to make those changes. This means that social media networks are not in the business of managing social profiles for maximum privacy.
The social media companies cannot afford total privacy. They need to gather demographical information about their users because that is the selling point they use to compete with against other marketing channels. The truth is that the social media systems have much more information about a person than any other advertising network. This is because the social media networks get a staggering amount of information about a person every year because the users freely volunteer it on their systems.
There was a non verified claim that people look at their social profiles every 30 seconds. If this number is true, then people are giving information to the social networks every 30 seconds. That is a lot of information about a person over the course of a year. The social media systems have the ability to track whose profile the user looked at in that moment, what pages they visited, what was said, and a lot more. All of this information is valuable to a business owner because it can all be put together to fit a profile of a person who is likely to buy from that business. All the business needs to do is test several messages to figure out who responds to which ad and use that ad with people who fit into that demographic profile. This is a recipe for success on the social networks and in advertising in general.
Therefore, the more information that a social network has about a person; the better they can pitch a business on their advertising model. Every business owner is looking for money in their market and this is a very easy way of getting that money. This is why a social network is in not in the business of managing profiles for privacy. It makes no sense for them to try to keep profiles private because they lose money in the process of guaranteeing privacy. They have to have the information to make money because they do not charge on the front end of the service.
In conclusion, a person should never try to learn social media privacy from a social media company because they are not in the business of keeping things private on their networks. This is like asking a lion to watch the lamb. It just does not make sense because the social network will always do what is in their benefit because they have to make money to keep the lights on in their business. Therefore, every user of the social networks must try to learn social media privacy from outlets that do not have a conflict of interest.
